THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER'S TOP 50 SONGS OF 2021

Hey guys, welcome to The Reclusive Blogger's Top 50 Songs of 2021. This is the first of two year-end music roundups and recaps.

Here I'll highlight my top 50 songs of 2021 and break down my 10 and why. These are my favorite tracks that had the biggest impression on me this year. Even with all the ups and downs, it has been quite the mega year for music. It's always great to look back shine a light on those songs again. To make it easier for you guys to listen to every song, I've included a Spotify playlist. I unveil my top 50 songs of 2021 all below...

1. BASTILLE - DISTORTED LIGHT BEAM

top 50 songs of 2021

Why it's #1 - Distorted Light Beam’ was the surprising first taste from the band’s upcoming fourth album. DLB showcases a band hungry for reinvention and striving to always be the very best version of themselves. Co-written and produced with Ryan Tedder and Maty Maro. It’s the bands' most pop forward and commanding song to date. Seeing Bastille push themselves & explore more pop sounds, dynamic lyricism, and production more than ever into their “Bastille” soundscape is refreshing. That’s why ‘Distorted Light Beam’ is number one. That and the fact it’s so darn catchy.

2. LIL NAS X - Montero (Call Me By Your By Name)

Why it's #2- Boundary pusher and new King Of Pop, Lil Nas X has had one incredible year. One of those things included the debut of my next pick Montero. The music video alone is a work of art. But the fact that a Queer man of color is ruling the pop and rap scene cannot be denied. Not only is Montero also catchy as hell but it’s pushing the boundaries, from the visual imagery he paints lyrically, to the references, truly everything. We have a new King Of Pop and his name is Montero.

3. CAROLINE POLACHEK - Bunny Is A Rider

Why it's #3- 'Bunny Is a Rider' has Caroline completely leaving her 'Pang' sound behind and I love it. From the start of the whistle, I was hooked. It’s weird, and it feels like you stepped into some unknown territory, unsure of where you are headed. The sparse yet slick production is a new sound for Caroline as is the syncopated at times almost staccato rhythms her vocals take on. It isn’t until this crazy joyride is over you realize you want more.

4. THE MARIAS - Hush

Why it's #4- 'Hush' (and Cinema) was one of the more arresting pieces of music this year. The single was an addicting blend of futuristic pop, a sleek and heady bass line, and edgy alternative guitars. What truly carries makes this song is the vocal interplay between the duo of María Zardoya, and Josh Conway.

5. JOJO - Creature Of Habit

Why it's #5- JoJo let's go on this beautifully vulnerable track about staying in a co-dependent relationship just because it feels familiar but not happy. Her powerhouse vocals shine throughout. As well as her unmatched ability to emote fluctuating emotions that often come with heartbreak, romance, love, relationships, is why this is #5 and she’s consistently my go-to.

6. SAD NIGHT DYNAMITE - Smoke Hole

Why it's #6- Not only does the production on this incredible track go hard, but it's hard to place genre-wise. The Somerset duo take inspiration from bands Massive Attack or the Gorillaz. They cleverly elevate mixing so many genres and create this all-out creeper of a jam. It slinks along until it finally worms its way into your ear, and unlike anything I've heard of late. Even their stop motion meets claymation music video is full of horror and creep.

7. HALSEY - I’m Am Not a Woman, I’m a God

Why it's #7- Halsey comes full circle as an artist on this exceptionally powerful track. It's an absolute banger of a song going full throttle from the start of its two minutes and fifty-six seconds. Underneath the darkened pulsating synths and thrashing guitars. It's Halsey owning her power and being a badass full stop. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are producers. Their signature DIY style complements a wrought and difficult tale. Halsey's lyrics on this song and throughout the album tackle difficult themes. She described it as a treatise on childbirth, misogyny, the patriarchy, love, feminism, and even death.

8. BTS - Butter

Why it's #8- This is not only one of the biggest songs of the year but it is from the biggest band & arguably the biggest artist. BTS has slowly taken over the world and not only captured our hearts but our eyes and ears. 'Butter' has an undeniable groove that mixes the best of K-POP and American Pop/R&B rhythms. To put it quite simply it's an earworm, with easy to sing lyrics. The cherry on the top is the bright, and super colorful dance-heavy music video.

9. OLIVIA RODRIGO - good 4 u

Why it's #9- It Girl Olivia kicked it up several notches displaying a fierce side of herself on this Pop Punk number. Borrowing a thing or two from the badass rock and pop girls of the aughts. It's fittingly the breakup anthem of this year. Rodrigo had us all spinning over this artful and thrilling takedown of an ex who moves on way too quickly.

10. MARINA - Purge The Poison

top 50 songs of 2021

Why it's #10- A gifted songwriter whose ability to quickly tap into emotions is something of a gift. Marina uses that talent to hone in on critics, climate control, and even misogyny. It's a well-crafted takedown of conspiracies, egos, and how we're destroying the planet. All set to brash fuzzy guitars, blistering synths, and a raging bass line. Marina ponders the human condition, friendships, witches, and living in Hollywood. It might seem like a lot but Marina ties it all together brilliantly. Her signature husky timbre hit hard almost staccato-like in her delivery.

CONCERT REVIEW + PHOTOS: GLASS ANIMALS AT HOLLYWOOD FOREVER

The new(ish) Indie Pop/Rock band are one the industry’s most exciting live music acts

Indie Rock quartet Glass Animals brought their groovy brand of heat to Hollywood Forever on Sunday with the ‘Dreamland’ tour. It’s a funky blend of nostalgic meets vaporwave that permeates the album but the shows as well. The tour featured the Electro Pop newcomer Binki as the opener. He played a short and engaging set closing out with “Heybb!”. A song you’ve most likely heard from its prominence of being in an Apple iPad commercial. While his energy was great, it was clear the crowd was there for Glass Animals (many didn’t arrive until they were on). The Indie Pop foursome comprised of childhood friends Joe Seaward, Ed Irwin-Singer and Drew Macfarlane is anchored by the feverishly bold lead singer, Dave Bayley. All walked out to a stunningly loud crowd full of cheers and energy that was ready to dance. Bayley who held a captive audience all night was also ready to party with us. He hovered somewhere between bewildered and emboldened, in awe of the crowd. Opening up the set with the futuristic lullaby “Dreamland”. Which segued into the tribal drum-heavy dance bop “Life Itself” & the island tinged “Tangerine” to kick off the party. Glass Animals tore through a 17 song setlist with such aplomb. Some of the major set highlights were the tour debut of “Poplar St.”. Where Dave Bayley forgot the lyrics (it had been a while) but powered through like a pro. “Space Ghost Coast to Coast”, which Dave remarked was a bit eerie playing in a cemetery. Their new track “I Don’t Wanna Talk (I Just Wanna Dance)” is truly the ultimate dance party. They closed out their fun albeit spooky two-day residency at Hollywood Forever with a two-song encore. Of which included the bands’ breakout hit “Heatwaves” and the glitch-inspired “Tokyo Drifting”. Overall, Glass Animals displayed exciting musicianship. Their knack for writing super catchy lyrics with dynamic pop hooks, all transferred brilliantly into a live setting. You can check out my photo gallery of the show below.

BRITISH ROCK BAND PLACEBO RETURN WITH NEW SINGLE “BEAUTIFUL JAMES”

Placebo make their defiant return to music with a new song titled “Beautiful James”. A song that seeks to normalize and celebrate non-heteronormative relationships in song.

Iconic Brit Rock band Placebo makes their return to music with the new single “Beautiful James”. The track is the band’s first new music in five years. Placebo also announced they’ve been in the studio with more new music on the way including an 8th studio album. The follow-up to the band's 2013 album ‘Loud Like Love’. “Beautiful James” is a highly poignant track in a time when cutting through the mire by way of emotions and art can feel quite heavy. A band known for consistently venturing forward through sound, and in a statement. Yet at the core, the heart of Placebo will always remain. Sonically, they create dimension through the use of twinkling bright synths. Texture in thrashing guitars that cut through those synths. Frontman Brian Molko's distinctive voice carries the track to fully flesh out the emotion and storytelling. Molko says speaking of the song; “Beautiful James" is not a polemic or even a conversation. It is a statement - one that is as clear and bold as they have ever made.

Beautiful James” - Single Art

Stream "Beautiful James" out now via Rise Records on all DSPs here. You can check out the visualizer here.

REVIEW: AUSTRALIA’S SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS UNVEILED VIRTUAL FESTIVAL SPLENDOUR XR

The hyped-up virtual festival was from the creators of Splendour In The Grass & Secret Sounds.

Over the weekend of July 23rd, the Splendour XR festival hit the masses. If the name sounds familiar that’s because it is. The event is from the creators of the famed Australian music festival, Splendour in the Grass. It was truly an impressive and fully immersive online and VR concert event. The two-day event headlined by Khalid and The Killers combined fashion, art, music and more. Splendour’s tickets were at a pretty decent price range, especially in comparison to how much the IRL festival costs. The festival also offered a relive ticket allowing fans to rewatch the event for up to 7 days afterward. Now to the lineup...

Many of the major highlights weren’t just the headliners Khalid & The Killers. Although Khalid had a solid, hit-filled groove worthy set. It was slow to start for anyone that might be unfamiliar with his songs. The Killers who headlined on Day two kept to basics aka well-known tracks and their hits. For a festival that staked it’s claim on being easily accessible and having so many options. Sometimes that can wind up being it’s crutch. Having such a wide variety of acts to see was a tad overwhelming. So for music lovers similar to me who often want to see a bit of everything. Including faves, new raves, the artist that everyone is buzzing about, etc it’s a lot. Their relive ticket option was perfect and came in handy for situations like this. Or for those who often wind up suffering that post-concert depression the minute any show is over. This offering did cost extra but is a lifesaver if you don’t mind shelling out the extra money.

It was fun to create a avatar and watch the different shows in a more interactive way online. Although it was a bit tricky at first when trying to navigate the different venues and areas. Artists like Aurora & Charli XCX immersed themselves into the inventiveness of the experience. It worked well with Aurora’s fairy tale quirky brand. Unfortunately, this wasn’t Charli best outing. Many of the EDM/Dance acts performing like TERAMETH and SKRAM took to the unique unusual format with aplomb. Other acts of note were the high-energy sets from Denzel Curry, Black Pumas, and CHVRCHES. The ‘Astronaut in the OceanMasked Wolf set forth a surprisingly fun set. As did bright young songwriter Griff. Alt-Indie darling Phoebe Bridgers brought a bit of California cool with her beautifully pared back set. other offerings on hand there was much to behold. From the Plastic Free Mermaid, Rainforest Yoga, even The Space Cowboy, who ventured into the strange and macabre. You could even learn some African Dance or hear from the various talks held. Most notable one on the importance of consent. All occurred in the Splendour Forum along with a comedy club. For the first official virtual-only festival, it was mission accomplished.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER'S TOP FIFTY SONGS OF 2020

These are my top fifty songs of 2020! Let’s go!

Hi, music lovers!!! It’s that time of the year again! I pick my top fifty songs of 2020. Yes, the one where every publication big or small does the yearly best-of roundup. While It has undoubtedly been a challenging year in and out of the music industry. Most of us having to switch gears finding new jobs, and new lives.

For some of us, the impact of COVID-19 has hit home even more with the insidious virus infecting our loved ones. So for many of us, music has always been that anchor even more so this year. Yet, for me despite the many albums that stood out this year. It has been a mega year for singles, live streams, and artists overall connecting with fans. As I say my lists (speaking of I have two new ones this year) always comes down to what struck my ears and soul the most. Without further ado here’s my top fifty songs of 2020 and in order. I have also included a Spotify playlist.

1. BASTILLE // survivin

“What can I say? I'm survivin'

And I'm gonna be fine, I'm gonna be fine

I think I'll be fine”

Why it's #1 - In addition to it being one of the catchiest songs of the year. Moreover, it pithily encapsulates this year, although written before 2020. They truly have a knack for writing what many of us feel whether acknowledged or not. I also love how the band feels much freer as they explore and experiment with their sound and production. Bastille winds up creating the ultimate lo-fi pop groove taking us all by surprise. While managing to stay true to what is the essence of Bastille in the process.

https://youtu.be/PmPNW1_LuaI

2. Hayley Williams // Simmer

Why it's #2 - Hayley Williams is utterly captivating on her debut solo single ‘Simmer’. It’s a song that’s powerful, tragic and ultimately beautiful. As she battles through myriad of emotions, including anger, anxiety, and even depression. It’s that we hear and feel in ‘Simmer’. It visceral and raw, it’s art. She even delves into her struggle with her feminity. It is all intertwined into a catchy albeit dark electro track. This was my most played track of the year. Hayley gave us light in the darkness.

https://youtu.be/8lSj5k2K7w0

3. Dua Lipa // Break My Heart

Why it's #3 - Whilesurvivin’ perfectly described the anxieties of 2020. Dua Lipa on Future Nostalgia brought forth a plethora of glossy disco-pop escapism anthems. The crowning achievement ‘Break My Heart’ has long been a standout song on Future Nostalgia and constant repeat. The music video is the cherry on top of the cake. It’s ripe with pop art colors lead by fantastic art direction that serves the storyline so well. And yes she did interpolate an INXS hit in the chorus. All I know is that I want to go to Dua’s intergalactic dance party.

https://youtu.be/Nj2U6rhnucI

4. Chloe x Halle // Do It

Why it's #4 - The sister duo honestly came out of nowhere for many this year with this stellar R&B meets pop gem. Yet the duo who signed to Beyonce’s record label Parklane Entertainment has been around a bit. ‘Do It’ is an absolute banger of a track. One that showcases major growth and progression in sound and style from Chloe x Halle. The pair pivot in a fresh direction where they introduced new collaborators & themes. They also amp up the sex appeal something that’s highlighted in the futuristic music video. But it is that massive 808 that kick starts and drives ‘Do It’.

https://youtu.be/a9HIaGcBocc

5. The Weeknd // In Your Eyes

Why it's #5 - Abel perfectly captures his vulnerability amongst this synth-heavy neon bop. One I kept on repeat. It’s also one of the few tracks where we find Abel leaning into that feeling. Through all the super tight and glossy production. There underlies emotion that’s raw, quite beautiful, and strong. Those vibes allow ‘In Your Eyes’ to stand out, on an album where most songs err hedonistic, cynical, and cold in style. Los Angeles seems a bad influence on Abel unless he’s in the arms of his lover. This song also features the most gorgeous saxophone for the outro courtesy of Tomas Jannson. The transition from the mostly synth-heavy song to saxophone outro is flawless. Truly such a great homage to so many wonderful 80s jams.

https://youtu.be/dqRZDebPIGs

6. The Marias // Hold It Together

Why it's #6 - Even though ‘Hold It Together’ vocally melts into one’s ears like a gorgeous fever dream. ‘Hold It Together’ itself comes from a place of anxiety, fear, and loneliness. Lead vocalist Maria Real co-wrote the song with fellow member/partner Josh Conway. It’s a track stemming from dealing with a long arduous tour and the anxieties of being the only female in the band. Maria felt the need to decompress and to spend time with Josh something that wasn't possible. Besides it being an incredibly relatable relationship song about the highs & lows. The Marias capture a vintage sound amongst all the layers of velvety guitars and luscious sauntering basslines. Everything put together is pure magic.

https://youtu.be/zoDv_Z68Dao

7. Niall Horan // Dear Patience

Why it's #7 - One of the singers’ more emotionally inviting songs on Heartbreak Weather. It sees the singer looking inward. Evoking the right imagery with melancholic guitars, keyboards, and the fiddle. Originally written to be a track about being patient when falling in love. All those nervous jitters one gets. It somehow manages to fit lockdown feelings and fears. The patience we all must have in this trying unprecedented time. I must say that this was a song that certainly helped me.

https://youtu.be/2yydOtiz4B0

8. Arlo Parks // Eugene

Why it's #8 - Arlo Parks was one of the biggest breakout acts this year. At only 19 her candid, rueful, and beautiful storytelling stood out. The track ‘Eugene’ is what put her on the map. It’s a painfully honest tale of love and heartbreak. Parks use of clever yet mournful wordplay easily puts us the listener in her mindset. Her golden almost butter like vocals are the icing on the cake.

https://youtu.be/ikwBBNnn2gI

9. Allie x & Mitski // Susie Save Your Love

Why it's #9 - Allie X and Mitski comes through with the ultimate girl power duet of the year. In a year of powerful female collabs this one stands out the most despite being super underrated. Two of pop’s most unique and intrepid voices trade verses atop the most arresting slinky synth beat. It’s Their voices blend and match so well they almost fold into one. On the surface the song is a peculiar song but dive deeper it’s a tale of love and heartbreak similar to ‘Eugene’. ‘Susie Save Your Love’ is one of the many tracks off ‘Cape God’ that’s not to be missed.

https://youtu.be/xRPyeNt5Wdg

10. Roddy Ricch // The Box

Why it's #10 - Rapper Roddy Ricch legit ruled this entire year with numerous hit songs and features. Although it was the out of nowhere monster banger ‘The Box’ set him up on the world stage. Ricch on the song uses ‘The Box’ as a metaphor anything that boxes someone in... particularly black people. In some of the rap verses Roddy makes direct mentions to guns and jail which hold the black community back. The song spent eleven weeks at number one on the Billboard charts. Then subsequently became a Tik Tok mega hit due to a last minute addition of a distinctly peculiar sound of “EE ER”. All the mixings of a hit but a viral hit. Roddy tapped into an intoxicating mix with this song. It’s engaging storytelling and viral sound creating one of the most surprising hits of the year.

INSIDE THE CAPITOL ROYALE WEEKEND KICKOFF PARTY...

Capitol Records held it's second annual Capitol Royale, a music and tech festival geared to bring together the music industry, creatives, and the tech field. This year's theme is "Music on the Move" and on Friday night the kickoff party for this year's event was held at Avalon Hollywood. It featured some of music's fiercest females at the Femme It Forward Showcase put on by Heather Lowery, VP of Talent & Touring at Live Nation Urban. The concert featured a fireside chat by Fletcher ("Undrunk" and "One Too Many"). As well as performances by up incomers, DeathbyRomy, Layton Greene, Maya B, and Phem. Also, DJ's Girl Make Beats who opened and kept the music flowing as guests trickled in. Many of these artists I have previously covered on The Reclusive Blogger. The showcase began with Fletcher, her and Amber chatted about feminism in the music industry, Fletcher's growth as an artist, and how to truly find one's voice as a woman in a typically male-dominated world, society, and workplace. Avalon Hollywood that night was filled with the music industry, tech industry, and creative professionals there to support a cause with Femme It Forward and all of the talented women artists performing that night.

DeathbyRomy was the first artist performing that night, she sang three songs from her "Love u – to Death" EP, "Problems", "Let Me Fall", and "Diamond Tears". Romy's vocals captured the attention of the audience immediately. I recently interviewed her at the Capitol Tower and you can check out that piece here.

Quality Control's Layton Greene was next and sung four tracks including the emotional hit "Blame On Me" which is off her debut EP, Tell Ya Story. Layton definitely got the crowd hype.

Maya B and her fantastic dancers were next. She performed three tracks including a favorite of mine "Dollar to a Diamond". That track is a real party starter and floor filler. I also got the chance to interview her which you can read here.

The night ended with Alternative Pop artist Phem (born Liv Marsico) she opened for Grandson on his recent tour and had a song ("dead yet") of hers placed on Euphoria which she played that night as well as one of my favorites "Sweater".

INTERVIEW WITH DEATHBYROMY... MUSIC'S' NEW GOTH POP PRINCESS

INTRODUCING DEATHBYROMY… MUSIC'S' NEW GOTH POP PRINCESS AND CAPITOL RECORDS NEWEST SIGNING THAT'S READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD...

On the eve of her album release show at Bardot Hollywood, I sat down with the artist known as DeathbyRomy at Capitol Records. The hallowed ground and sacred halls seemed to carry even more weight so late at night. Upon meeting her she dressed for the show in head to toe full-on Goth Pop Princess garb and we quickly settled in. The interview felt more like a chat among friends despite our age gap (Romy is Gen Z, I'm Gen Y). We talked about the new EP "Love u - to Death", musical inspirations, how we are both from Los Angeles, even heavier subjects such as the state of the world. Her EP explores this and many other things in life such as love, passion, relationships and how they can be freeing. DeathbyRomy paints these stories using not only stark lyric imagery but by blending multiple genres. Meet DeathbyRomy.

Interview has been edited for clarity

Love u - to Death

DEATHBYROMY: Are you from L.A.?

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Yeah, near Pasadena.

DEATHBYROMY: I've been Mid city my whole life.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: I always start off with a fun icebreaker question. So are you a Red Vines girl or Twizzlers?

DEATHBYROMY: Red Vines! Twizzlers tastes to rubbery it's like your chewing on barely flavored rubber.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Yeah, agreed!

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Let’s talk about your new EP “Love u – to Death” what was the writing and recording process like for it? Also the album art! It's really cool!

DEATHBYROMY: Thank you so much!

DEATHBYROMY: Um, so after doing my EP last year which was called “Monsters”. I kind of was writing a lot about my first love. And after writing a bunch of sad love songs I really wanted to kind of try and find another level of myself, a deeper confidence, hopefully less sad and less like my heart is broken kind of vibes. So when it came to starting to write New Music for what I didn't know was going to be “Love u - to death.” I was really trying to pull from rediscovering myself worth. Finding out what I really want in love and not being afraid to be a bit sexy and passionate, and touch on all of those emotions. So, I think this EP has a lot more energy and up and down songs like, “I Feel Like a God”, and “Let Me Fall”, and, “Diamond Tears” is a big self worth anthem, which I really love.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: I like how you have different genres going in each of the songs and it’s not just one kind of leaning towards one different genre.

DEATHBYROMY: Thank you. I'm very inspired by all different genres. So when it came to this project, I feel like I was listening to a lot of Kanye, a lot of Bring Me The Horizon. A lot of Lana Del Rey.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Love, Lana!

DEATHBYROMY: Do you like Bring Me The Horizon?

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Yeah, I do. I'm not their biggest fan. I like their newer stuff definitely.

DEATHBYROMY: Yeah, they're awesome. I'm really inspired by their production a lot. A good mix of electronic and rock.

DEATHBYROMY: The cover, the covet was shot by this girl, Maddie Cordova, she's a really cool female photographer that made shooting it really comfortable. The idea behind it obviously was to use my signature and makeup really continue to brand that and also have half my face is a skeleton for the like love you to death aspect. So that's why on one half, it's like just my face, kind of a pretty beauty shot and the other half is the skull to kind of touch on the beauty and the darkness that there is in love and death. I thought it was perfect idea for the cover. This guy Harlee helped edit the whole cover.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Continuing on from the previous questions what's a typical creative process like for you?

DEATHBYROMY: It depends. I can be really all over the place. Sometimes I know. I'll have a studio session. And so I'll try and wrap my head, my head around the concept that I want to write about that day. Sometimes I know what I want to write about. Sometimes I don't and I kind of randomly grab inspiration. So another way I find inspiration is say just Sitting at a cafe or like riding the bus and all of a sudden I think about something like, wow, I have a lot I can say about this, like, I think I'll choose to write about this later. Sometimes I'll put it in my notes, or sometimes I'll start writing that in there just in my phone. Then at times, when I feel haven’t allotted enough time for writing, then I will set aside actual time to like, I'm going to try and write something. Whatever it is, I think at this time, I'm constantly writing now, almost every day.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: That's good. It helps when you're constantly writing because it keeps the creative juices flowing.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Let’s talk about your first and current single off  “Love u – to Death”... “Problems” and the inspiration behind it? Why you chose that single? What was the writing process like? Also the album art?

DEATHBYROMY: Sure! So I actually made "Problems" like a year ago, and it was probably the most pop leaning record I'd ever recorded at the time. What I thought was really cool is since people haven't really heard me do anything in that style, and since this project is really all over the place, I thought it would be smart to kind of throw them off with something they never heard before, see how they react, and then show them like, some of how the whole project sounds like as it's actually all over the place. But "Problems" is also just a record a lot of my friends fell in love with. I know you're not supposed to listen to others' opinions, but I couldn't help but think if all of them love it and think it's so catchy it definitely has something to it. So, me and my team decided that, that should be the single. When it comes to the video, I collaborated with this female director named Mara and I had presented her with a video treatment that I wrote myself. It kind of touched on wanting my problems to be personified by people and that's where those people in the video all have like their own separate issue. Yeah, it kinda meant to be like seven sins or my problems personified. Her and I went back and forth with ideas together and eventually we came up with what you now see in the video. I like there's a lot of different themes of sin and problems, like the snakes and the last supper scene. You see my parents not paying attention to me while watching all of the world's issues.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Are those your real parents? Haha...

DEATHBYROMY: Haha. No. I was gonna say I should've done my real parents, but I feel like my Dad would not have been able to pull off the activities.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Is there a lyric from “Problems” that you think speaks to how your generation feels particularly about the state of world currently?

DEATHBYROMY: Though, I'm not gonna lie. This chorus is an extremely me and someone who really, really cares about what's going on in the earth with the end environment with issues at the border is for sure everything going on. But I, I have been in moments very consumed in my own issues to where I don't want to think about anything. And I think that's something a lot of teenagers can relate to, for example, the line I've got too many problems for all the world's problems, which is kind of like the, the main point. And I mean, when I was younger, and I was less smart, I often would do things that were stupid to just get my mind off of my own issues. And I think a lot of kids struggle with doing that instead of facing things head on and actually being self aware. So I think I think that's a line a lot of especially young teenagers perhaps can relate to. Yeah, at that time. I feel like you're so consumed with your own issues, your own anxieties, your own situation on how you even feel about yourself that you don't want to think about it.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Yes! I agree. Everything just feels immediate and monumental. Like it's not going to end and I just can't handle this right now. It's a lot. And speaking from someone who was a teenager somewhat ago, at the time everything to me seemed horrible and it wasn't going to go away. Then you look back on it, you realize...

DEATHBYROMY: ...like, wow, that was just such a small moment in my life.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Yeah, even the stuff that was really bad you look back on you go like, wow, I made it out.

DEATHBYROMY: Yes, thankfully. Much better now.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: How do you feel your fashion and sense of style ties into your music and over image as an artist? Do you think that is something that is important to have as an artist?

DEATHBYROMY: I think your own sense of purpose. style, whatever that be, whether it be something flashy or completely casual is extremely important. I think being comfortable in your body and what you're wearing matters more than how it may look to other people. And as a person/artist, I have always been inspired by all different types of fashion and so I feel like some days you'll see me in a dress and combat boots some days you'll see me in sweatpants and a hoodie some days you'll see me in graphics or somebody will see me in all black and I love the freedom to express myself in that way, because I don't different days I feel different levels of comfortability with my own body and I like being able to kind of go all over the place with it. I'm very gravitated towards dark and kind of Yeah, I guess dark fashion. My favorite colors baby pink. Yeah, yeah, it really just depends on the day and I love kind of having the freedom to express however I want to feel in my clothing.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Cool.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Switching gears to a few fun questions. What’s your top three Horror films?

DEATHBYROMY: One of them that, like off the bat comes to mind is The Shining by Stanley Kubrick. It's one of my favorite directors. And just such an artsy horror film more than it is necessary to scary. You can tell every detail was so cared for. I just love Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King. The book is fine. That's definitely one of them. Honestly, recently, I was Hereditary and that was one of the first movies in a while but really scared me. So for that reason, I really appreciate it. I love Toni Collette as an actress. She was also the mom in Little Miss Sunshine.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Yeah, I liked her in The Sixth Sense. I saw that one in theaters, but I was like really little.

DEATHBYROMY: Let's see. Number three, number three. Number three. I'm gonna have to go. This is a really funny and weird one. It’s called House. It's a Japanese horror film. This one is honestly more bizarre than it is scary or good. But it's just the amount of creativity that must have been put into creating these scenes on such a low budget. That’s probably my list.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Good choices, great.

DEATHBYROMY: Thank you.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Dream concert venue to play at?

DEATHBYROMY: Definitely can't wait to headline Madison Square Garden. But honestly because I'm from L.A. the day I can sell out the Staples Center will be like, or the Hollywood Bowl will be a dream come true. I'm gonna say Hollywood Bowl because I like that venue more.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Do it for L.A.!

DEATHBYROMY: I will! Yes, the day I can do that. All my dreams will come true. I feel as though all of my dreams had come true at that point.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: If you could live in any fictional universe, which would you choose?

DEATHBYROMY: Harry Potter because I always fantasized about being able to have magic. (Romy's Harry Potter house has changed overtime but she identifies as Gryffindor)

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: If you could collaborate with any artist past or present who would you collab with and why?

DEATHBYROMY: Well, picking one is probably the hardest thing to do. But I would love to sing a song with Bjork. She's an Icelandic singer. She's not only shooting an incredible vocalist, but she's an amazing producer and visual artist, and she's one of my biggest, biggest inspiration. She's my Favorite Female Vocalist of all time. She's my personal favorite.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: That'd be a cool fit.

DEATHBYROMY: Yeah, it'd be really interesting. I think it makes me really weird and beautiful. And she inspires me constantly. I think she’s absolutely incredible. I saw her live earlier this year in New York.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What artists or bands have been “On Repeat” on your playlists recently?

DEATHBYROMY: Let's us be very specific! So I've been listening to my music. I'm not gonna lie. I listen to my music all the time. I've been listening to "Cry Baby" by Melanie Martinez, which is one of my favorite albums. I've been listening to "Mourn" by Corbin. He's an incredible singer and writer. I feel like his songs are just so real like you can't help but feel his pain every time I listen to his music. I have been listening to Sevdaliza, she's incredible, lots of Bring Me The Horizon, and "Treats" by Sleigh Bells.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: And what's next on the horizon for DEATHBYROMY?

DEATHBYROMY: Currently, I'm really trying get my first U.S. solo tour going. It will be really intimate club shows but I'll be up close and personal with my fans. Also I am always working on music.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Cool! Anything else you would like to say for my readers at my magazine?

DEATHBYROMY: Well, I guess one of the things I like to emphasize about me as an artist is that I'm a very lyrics first person. I've been writing ever since I was five and I feel like the lyrics are the spine of a song though. Production and lyrics are equally as important in the final product. I feel like if you have lyrics that are strong, that they can carry even the simplest beat. And so yeah, that's me as an artist.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: I had the best time here. It was really great talking to you.

DEATHBYROMY: Thank you so much for coming! It's the same really glad I get to speak with you face to face.

Later that night I got to see Romy kill it at her album release event. This girl is definitely going places and the crowd absolutely loved her. You can check out the setlist from the show below as well stream her second new EP "Love u - to Death" out now on Capitol Records.

BRITISH ROCK BAND BASTILLE TURN UP THE VOLUME AT THE GREEK THEATRE

Bastille Brought Doom Days To The Greek And A Lively Show!

South London band Bastille made their return to Los Angeles on Saturday. The band brought their Doom Days Tour Part 1 with opener Joywave to the The Greek Theater. The "Happier" and "Quarter Past Midnight" musicians played a twenty song set to the pack amphitheater of fans. All were thrilled to see their favorite band play under the beautiful nighttime sky.

Indie Rock band Joywave started the night out with their poppy Electronic influenced Rock. The band lead by Daniel Armbruster started the night off with one of Joywave's newest tracks "Like A Kennedy". They were smooth and effortless on stage. All while having fun managing to make good use of their relatively short set. Joywave played a nice variety of tracks from their career. Joywave properly closed their set with their latest single "Obsession".

Los Angeles came through for Bastille last weekend. Fans had been waiting a while for a proper U.S. concert tour for the Doom Days album. It was finally here. Bastille came out to a raucous and roaring number of cheers and excitement. Opening with their huge Alternative Rock radio hit "Quarter Past Midnight". Frontman Dan Smith was full of energy and his vocals on point. The fans singing along with him to every word. Bastille's overall performance and sound is always pretty cohesive, but tonight seemed to be extra special and tight. The guys were in a lively fun mood as they played through a twenty song set. That was a mix across three albums and one mixtape.

Crowd faves like "Happier", "Bad Blood", "Flaws", and "Of The Night" had everyone on their feet throughout the set. We also finally got to hear the much asked for "The Waves". Dan even surprised the audience bringing out one of his Best Laid Plans records artists, The Dawn Of May. The Dawn Of May sang with him and the rest of the band on "World Gone Mad" and "Doom Days". The night ended on the quintessentially British track "Million Pieces". Then the song that made the band who they are, "Pompeii". Bastille brought out tourmates Joywave on "Pompeii" for an epic finale. You can check out my photos of Bastille and Joywave from the show all down below!

POP SINGER MARINA LIGHTS UP THE GREEK THEATRE WITH OPENER ALLIE X

Songwriter and Pop singer Marina (formerly Marina and The Diamonds) brought her Love + Fear tour to The Greek Theatre this past Friday, October 4th. The artist known for her songs like "Primadonna" and "Orange Trees" brought her A-game with strong and gorgeous vocals. Marina's performance also included choreographed interpretive dance routines from her and her color-coordinated dancers and back up singers. It was to match a notable look that night from Marina. The artist was wearing a look styled by Mercedes Natalia. A stunning custom OLIMA Studio corset two-piece that featured her two cats, Jupi and Mavis. Marina's fans turned out in droves in the canyons that night, many dressed in outfits from her different eras. But many were also there to see Marina's opener, Allie X and she did not disappoint. The Canadian singer-songwriter also captured the audience playing songs like "Paper Love" and her new song "Fresh Laundry". Allie X like Marina are both unique female singer-songwriters who play by their own rules. Last Friday both put their vocal prowess on display at The Greek Theatre. You can view my photo gallery from the show below!

WHAT IS THE CARPOOL KARAOKE MIC AND HOW DOES IT WORK? FIND OUT BELOW!

“This is a sponsored post and giveaway by The Singing Machine and Carpool Karaoke Mic. We also received samples from them as well. The post also contains affiliate links. Anyone who knows me or at the very least reads anything on this blog knows that music is very precious to me. It has gotten me through tough times, and it's a source of celebration, I've found friends, discovered new things about myself and the reason I started this website. Therefore when I got the opportunity to work with The Singing Machine on a product of theirs called Carpool Karaoke The Mic (yes, we know I can't sing, but that's not the point here.) I seized the chance and made a video which you can view below. We have all heard about James Corden's famous Carpool Karaoke segment which features musicians, celebs singing their hearts out in a car as James drives around Los Angeles. Effectively, this mic allows you to experience something pretty darn close. I took the mic out for a test spin with my Mom and my younger brother, Jordan. We weren't driving in the video I attached below, but you can use it when driving but be sure not to be the one driving. I found this perfect for families, large friend groups on long car rides and of course road trips. This is a must for festival season trips as well. All you have to do is connect it to an open FM radio station (a radio station with static and no service) connect a device (your cell phone will work) to Bluetooth and get this party started. James Corden's voice will come on the mic asking to play some music. All you have to do is hit play on your fave tunes as you sing along. The mic lights up as well for all of you aesthetic lovers too! Now you can recreate the famous Carpool Karaoke segments in your car in the perfect way possible. Plus to add extra incentive I'm giving away a mic on Instagram. But if you're not one of the lucky winners you can purchase a mic at the links below.

You can purchase the Carpool Karaoke mic here as well other products from The Singing Machine. There you can also use my affiliate code: BRITTWILLIAMS

FRANK IERO AND THE FUTURE VIOLENTS, GEOFF RICKLY, & LOW SPEECH // CONCERT REVIEW + PHOTO GALLERY

Frank Iero and The Future Violents brought the Barriers World Tour to its concluding stop at The Troubadour this past Saturday. The band was touring on the heels of it's newest release Barriers with openers Geoff Rickly and Low Speech. The support remains high for the former My Chemical Romance member. With many fans lining up early for the 8:00 PM door time and wearing band tees from some of Frank's former musical endeavors.

The first act onstage was Low Speech, their opening set was loud, fun yet quite melodic. They got the crowd all warmed up and singing along in a short amount of time. The second act of the night was Geoff Rickly, whom you might know from the band Thursday. It was just him and a guitar that was hooked up to a laptop. The crowd was super into it singing along to every word. Geoff's vocals were loud, clear and rich. His storytelling in song and his storytelling just talking was on point. As was his guitar work, but that's what 20 years of touring and playing in bands will do. He regaled the audience with stories of working with Frank and his former bandmates Gerard and Mikey Way on the first MCR album. His crowd interaction was just enough.

The headliner Frank Iero and The Future Violents ended the night to a boisterous and packed house (as some people didn't arrive until he was on.) The band walked on stage to loud cheers tearing into a twenty song set that included a four-song encore. Everything about the band, the crowd, and the minimal production, including the crazy lighting, screamed lo-fi punk. The setlist ranged from the opening number "Moto Pop" to "Young and Doomed", "24K Lush", "Joyriding", and "Best Friends Forever (But Not Now)". Frank's vocals were strong and kinetic the entire show with his band being just as intense. Feeding off that energy, the crowd was loving every minute of it shouting back every lyric, dancing along, headbanging, and even moshing on a few songs. It was truly a fun night whether you happened to be a long-time fan of Frank Iero or a just a fan of great guitar rock.

SIRIUSXM'S COFFEE HOUSE PRESENTS MATT COSTA, JD & THE STRAIGHT SHOT AND MATT HARTKE // CONCERT REVIEW + GALLERY

Last Thursday at the iconic Troubadour in West Hollywood Sirius XM's The Coffee House Tour made a stop in Los Angeles. The tour is Sirius XM's Coffee House station in a live format. It features three of its biggest artists from the station Matt Hartke, JD & The Straight Shot, and Matt Costa. If you listen to the station or were there like I was you would know these bands are loved by Sirius XM also its many listeners.

The night began with Matt Hartke a pop-leaning singer-songwriter who has written with some of today's biggest Pop stars such as The Chainsmokers and the late Avicii. Matt took to the stage with just guitar playing through what was a relatively short set but an impactful one. Matt relied on clean clear storytelling and strong vocals to carry across what was an overall good set. After a short break and a fairly quick stage change, JD & The Straight Shot came out. The band which is Jim Dolan, Marc Copely, Byron House, Erin Slaver, Shawn Pelton, and Carolyn Dawn Johnson describes themselves simply as folk-rock. The band has a lot of heavy hitters in music and songwriting. JD & The Straight Shot is a fun and rollicking band live bringing to the stage the experience from years of talent, touring, and musicianship. I found that violinist Erin Slaver is particularly enchanting. The night closed with Southern Californian musician Matt Costa and his band. Of all the artists playing that night, he fit the typical mold of the coffee house style of music. His music was mostly piano-based but instrumentation such as harmonica, guitars, drums, and even the tambourine were often front and center. Matts track Mr. Pitiful stuck out the most to me for its jaunty melodies and just all-around great storytelling. The night ended with Matt and his band coming back for an encore. You can view my photo gallery from the show posted below.

SAM SMITH // ‘HOW DO YOU SLEEP?’ - SINGLE REVIEW

Singer Sam Smith is back with a new one. On “How Do You Sleep?” we find the singer in fierce and freeing vibe and his immediately recognizable vocals soaring on this Dance-R&B track. The music video for the track has Sam breaking out into a few dance moves for the first time surrounded by dancers. Lyrically though, Sam Smith finds himself in a familiar and comfortable territory in terms of love and heartache. As it is a highly introspective track with the singer mulling over a relationship and a particular sadness that can set in when one sees their personality change for the worse. Sam Smith collaborated with renowned songwriters/producers Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, and ILYA on “How Do You Sleep?” and Grant Singer and Paris Goebel for the music video. You can stream and download the track here. I have posted the music video below as well.

BANKS // III - ALBUM REVIEW

BANKS the genre-blending singer-songwriter returns with her third LP aptly titled III. The record was produced by BANKS herself and BJ Burton, who worked with such artists as Bon Iver and Francis and The Lights (who is featured in a track on this record). III is a highly emotional record for not only BANKS herself but the listener. Every ounce of emotion pouring from BANKS is felt and heard through lyrics, sound and subtle nuance. Most of these emotions are not often comfortable but BANKS growth as an artist and more importantly as a woman are evident. On "Till Now" which slowly builds into a thundering war cry and is the perfect album opener. BANKS lets the listener know she's here and has so much to say. Amongst the lush production and arrangement, BANKS is heard loud and clear. The lead single "Gimme" is a female empowerment anthem about calling the shots in life, but in your relationships and in the bedroom as well. This is not the same woman we first heard in 2014’s Goddess, LP or even the one of 2016’s The Altar. BANKS is realizing her power not only in life but on this record as well. Tracks like "Contaminated" and "Godless" have so much raw and uncomfortable real painful emotion it can be difficult to listen to. You’re right along with her... you feel her. III is a raw and honest record on the imbalance in the give and takes in toxic relationships. Just when you thought BANKS couldn’t get any more aggressive she flips the script on "Stroke." A song that’s full of angst and her unique style of cheeky wordplay, only this time it has been elevated. The grungy manipulated sounds and vocals only add texture to this song. The underlying tie to all of the songs is the R&B genre its where BANKS finds home and where she flourishes best particularly on the soft melodic tracks such as "Hawaiian Mazes" which is a beautiful slow burn. The ending track "What About Love." It features sweet notes from her four-year-old niece saying “I Love You” and a great reminder that we should always lean on love.
