CELEBRATION OF BLACK CINEMA PRESENTED BY CRITICS CHOICE ASSOCIATION
Monday night at The Landmark Annex for the first year ever was the Celebration of Black Cinema presented by the Critics Choice Association. The first years' honorees were not only celebrating Black film making and the first black filmmaker Oscar Micheaux. They celebrated Eddie Murphy with a career achievement award, Nia Long, Kasi Lemmons, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Eddie Murphy had his career achievement award presented by Ruth E. Carter, with Nia Long's presented by Chaz Ebert. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kasi Lemmons awards were presented by Don Cheadle and prolific film and TV producer Debra Martin Chase, respectively.

The attire for last night's ceremony was Holiday festive with many dressing to impress and major outlets were covering the red carpet, but it was also a time for seeing friends right before the Holidays. The host of the ceremony was former Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs, she was The Academy's first Black Female President. The night was truly special, filled with plenty of moving moments that spoke to me as a Black artist and creative. It was a night that I left feeling hopeful and truly energized. After seeing the early clips of Oscar Micheaux's film works (His most known film is The Homesteader). To hearing the ardent and often witty introductions and speeches from the nights' special guests and honorees. The ceremony was not only eye-opening but entertaining. Nia Long's speech, in particular, grabbed me about the struggle and triumphs of being a black woman in Hollywood. Nia was also surprised by John Singleton's daughter Justice as Singleton was a huge influence on her career. John gave her, her first movie role. The night ended on a high note and an intimate cocktail party, which was a toast to the amazing nominees this year. It was an honor to attend and thanks greatly to the Critics Choice Association for the invite out.
