Meet Canada’s Jocelyn Alice a Pop leaning Singer-Songwriter whose 2015 breakout summer song “Jackpot” put her name on the musical map. Now with her current single out “The Dark”, a track about strength and healing. I interviewed the singer about it, her creative and writing process, and why she feels social media is not integral to her artistic process.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: I always start off with an ice breaker question so are you a Morning Bird or Night Owl?

JOCELYN ALICE: I am 100% early bird. I always have been and always will be. There’s nothing sweeter than the quiet of dawn.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Let’s talk some about your current single “The Dark”. What was the inspiration behind your track and how was the creative process like for it?

JOCELYN ALICE: I really believe in the concept of embracing whatever you’re going through in order to truly get past something. I wanted to capture that moment of finding the courage to face something we know we’re running from. I think it’s really easy to choose distractions instead of healing because healing can be so painful. But I think I’ve learned from own experience that it’s actually much more painful in the long run to hold on to old patterns. “The Dark” is about letting that pain wash over you because you know that’s where real growth comes from.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What’s a typical creative and writing process like for you?

JOCELYN ALICE: It definitely differs depending on who I’m working with. If I’m doing a random session with a stranger I like to come in with a hook I will have written by myself accapella. If I’m working with Marshall or Lindsey Ray or someone I’m really comfortable with I’ll usually let the song write itself in the moment.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: If you could write a song about any fictional character who would it be and why?

JOCELYN ALICE: I wouldn’t. I don’t really connect with fictional anything. I love real people. I only really read autobiographical stuff and watch reality (although I know it’s all BS, I still like that it’s about real people). Whenever I write with other artists I love knowing what they’re going through. I love for my songs to feel as raw and authentic as possible.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: In what part do you feel that social media has played in your growth as a artist?

JOCELYN ALICE: Honestly… not much. Hahaha. And I’m really proud of that. My following is mainly built of people that actually really love my music. My spotify numbers are so much bigger than my instagram or FB numbers. Sometimes that makes me feel really insecure when I compare myself to other artists on social media. But then I remember WHY I decided to get into music in the first place. It wasn’t for fame or attention. It’s because I want to say something that matters or can help someone. And I believe I’m doing that. So I just try to focus on that as much as I can and remember that social media can be a really great tool for connecting with people, but it can also be really triggering for my mental health, so I’m not on there very much.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Are there any artists that have been “On Repeat” for you lately? What music have you listening to?

JOCELYN ALICE: I’m obsessed with Lauv. He’s actually on my label and a big reason I chose to sign with them. He’s just so classic yet fresh.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: And what’s next for you, Jocelyn Alice?

JOCELYN ALICE: I’m hopefully gonna be playing some shows in some cities I’ve never played, I’ll forever be working on my next album and collabing some incredible up and coming talent that I can’t wait to tell you guys about.

You can stream “The Darkhere.

Until then,
