I chatted with Hannah ahead of her debut album release “Remedy”

Remedy” is the debut album from soulful Welsh Pop chanteuse Hannah Grace. Grace is from Wales and signed to Gabrielle Aplin’s record label Never Fade Records. The promising new artist found herself championed by the likes of Lady Gaga and Dermot O’Leary. She has even opened for Hozier and. An artist whose keen pop sensibilities and honeyed melodies keep her songwriting firmly rooted. Yet, you can hear the echoes those jazz halls from the 1940s and 50s in things such as her smokey vocal delivery. Hannah’s latest cut from the “Remedy” album breathes that. “Missing The Show” is a song about hope and love. About being in a relationship and waiting for the potential to blossom. I spoke with Hannah over email. We talked about her upcoming album, the latest single, her creative process, and much more. Read on below…

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: So your debut album “Remedy” is coming out very soon… How was the recording and writing process for it?

HANNAH GRACE: This has been what I have been working towards for my entire career so far. It feels like a huge achievement. The record is a reflection of my life for the past 3 years and it sort of became my homemade Remedy. Making it was a constant thread in my life, an outlet for me to express how I felt and reflect on the world around me. I am so excited for it to finally be out in the world.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What was the hardest track for you to pen down from the upcoming album?

HANNAH GRACE: All of the songs had challenges while writing. All of the songs are very personal to me so sometimes it can be quite intense getting it out. I wrote “Healing Hands” & “Bring Me Home” when I was quite Blue and doubtful, so those were heavy for me and took a while to finish. But it always feels good in the end.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What’s the backstory behind the album art? How did you choose the final image?

HANNAH GRACE: I had a photoshoot with an amazing photographer called Saskia a few months back. On the shoot, I had such an amazing team who all helped to make it exactly as I imagined. We wanted the images for the album to be quite classic and bright. Almost with a vintage feel with the flowers in my hair. I just love the colours in the final album artwork. I love how it’s direct and both feminine and strong.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Your current single “Missing The Show” feels a bit like an inner of unspoken words or truth… Can you dive a bit more into the inspiration behind it?

HANNAH GRACE: I wrote ‘Missing the Show’ about being in a relationship waiting for its potential to blossom, but it never does. When you put in so much to another person it can be exhausting if it’s never returned or if it never feels equal. But sometimes letting someone go completely feels like giving up. Relationships are hard. This song is about coming to terms with that realisation.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: I loved the intimacy in the clip for “Missing The Show”. How did the music video come together for this song?

HANNAH GRACE: I knew I wanted to make some visuals for this song, as it has such a cinematic feel. I was in West Wales on my favourite beach (Newgale) and it was a beautiful day, I was feeling creative so I just decided to make it – I’m so happy with how it worked out, I feel like it brings the music to life a little more.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Continuing on the theme of music videos… What music video of yours has been the most fun to make? And what music video by another artist do you do find the most inspiring or your favorite?

HANNAH GRACE: I have been lucky enough to be involved in some amazing music videos and have worked with some really talented people. I really enjoyed making the music video for “Blue” which came out earlier this year. It was completely different to anything I’d ever done before, and it was exciting creating something so different. I have always been inspired by the vintage aesthetic and this video let me induce in my vintage TV dreams.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: How has your creative process changed over the years? Do you have any tips for other creatives struggling with their creative process in times like these?

HANNAH GRACE: I have always kind of just gone with the flow. For me personally, I can’t force a good song, it just happens. So my advice would be not to force it or put too much pressure on every idea, just do what feels good and listen to music that moves and inspires you.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: You were invited to perform at London Fashion Week by designer Richard Quinn. What was that like? Had you been to fashion week before?

HANNAH GRACE: This was such an amazing experience, I am so grateful that Richard asked me to be involved. It wasn’t like any other performance I have ever done, I sang 3 songs live with a string section while the fashion show and catwalk happened around me. It was incredible. I had never been to London Fashion Week before either so the whole thing was hugely special and memorable.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What’s your earliest musical memory?

HANNAH GRACE: I can’t really remember music not being a part of my life. I was always just surrounded by music, my parents always say I was singing before I could talk. I have a very strong memory of listening to Eva Cassidy’s album Songbird from a really young age, that was the first album I fell I love with and Eva still inspires my music today.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: If you could write a song about any fictional character or universe who or what would you choose and why?

HANNAH GRACE: I quite like thinking about the past or the future, I have often written songs about my past self. So maybe I could write a song to my future self. Almost like a little time capsule.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: If you could collaborate with any artist past or present who would you collab with and why?

HANNAH GRACE: There are so many, as I am writing this I am listening to Etta James, I feel like she would have been a dream to write or sing with. Her or Aretha or Ella, I feel like just having a conversation with those women would be inspiring.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What songs have been burning up your playlists, Hannah? What have you had “On Repeat” of late?

HANNAH GRACE: I have been listening to a lot to Etta James again – she is beautiful. I also really love Lianne La Havas’ new album, it just sounds so good.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What has been your most fun or memorable gig that you have played?

HANNAH GRACE: I was lucky enough to support Barbra Streisand in Hyde Park last year which was amazing! I still can’t believe it happened. So that’s definitely up there for me. But there are so many – otherwise, it would probably have to be one of the Never Fade collaborations – my label do a Christmas show every year where all the artists come together for a show, we have also played a few festivals, and it’s always so wholesome and wonderful.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: To end… Is there anything else you would like to add? Thank you so much for your time! 🙂

HANNAH GRACE: Thanks for having me! I am just so excited to get my album into the world! I hope people love it. Also looking forward to playing some shows in the not too distant future! (fingers crossed!)
