INTERVIEW WITH... CANADIAN GUITAR POP ARTIST ABBY J HALL

A chat with Canada’s Abby J Hall about her refreshing new single & more!

Canadian pop singer-songwriter Abby J Hall hails from Burlington, Ontario. Hall finds inspiration in artists like Alec Benjamin & Taylor Swift. Artists whose storytelling is their anchor. It’s also something the multi-instrumentalist is striving for in her songs. The young rising artist has been in the studio and releasing new singles. Including the timely track ’Neighbours’, which Abby co-wrote with Toronto artist Darrelle London. I chatted with Abby about her new music and much more which you can read down below.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: How has lockdown been for you? Have you had to adjust creatively? What has your 'new normal' been like for you as an artist?

ABBY J HALL: Lockdown, especially back in March, was definitely an adjustment, everyone having to change their plans and make new ones. Creatively, it’s made me hunker down on my own releases, coming up with the best ways to showcase them and focusing on songwriting/ networking.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Are you working on any new music/projects?

ABBY J HALL: Yes I am! I’m always writing and am planning on releasing another single within the upcoming months.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: I'd like to talk about your current string of singles that you've released. In particular “Neighbour". I love the intention behind the track. How did this song come together? What was the writing and recording process like for you?

ABBY J HALL: Thanks so much! One of the things I like about “Neighbour” is that it’s really been added to and built on over the past four years. I started writing it in 2016 with Toronto artist, Darrelle London. It was inspired by a conversation we were having about getting caught up in our own worlds and how it’s easy to look at someone and judge without knowing their story. The recording process was great, the track was produced by Andre Kaden Black, Co-produced by Tal Vaisman. I was actually had a bad head cold that day and was worried I wouldn’t be able to hold the “nobody knows” line at the end of the bridge. With the guys in the studio, our ideas were very aligned in how we wanted the track to sound which made it a fun process!

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Your newest release is “All I Wanted” can you delve into the backstory of that song?

ABBY J HALL: Yes, I think sometimes words left unsaid can hurt the most, leaving space for your own mind to jump to conclusions without knowing the truth. I’m personally not the best at “brushing it off” and would rather talk it out right away otherwise, I’ll tend to hold onto it. The song is really about my personal experience of missing a friend and getting over my own angst in expressing that. Whatever the outcome, there is something freeing in saying what needs to be said and leaving space for vulnerability.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Switching gears... What is one song that you never tire of?

ABBY J HALL:Everything” by Michael Buble. His “Michael Buble” album was my first CD! I’d go into my bedroom, get out the CD player and memorize all the words to the songs haha.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What has been one of your most fun or memorable gigs that you've played?

ABBY J HALL: I think the last Sofar show Toronto I played back in March was awesome. I shared the stage with some great artists and it was a really intimate, engaged audience with a great band, The Agenda, backing me up.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Continuing on the same theme... What's one of your favorite venues to perform at?

ABBY J HALL: The main stage at the Sound Of Music Festival in Burlington, Ontario was definitely a favourite!

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What's your pick for the song of summer 2020?

ABBY J HALL: Ohh I’d have to say “Invisible String” by Taylor Swift. “Folklore” is such a mood. Bopped to “Summer Feelings” by Lennon Stella and Charlie Puth a lot as well.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Last question, Abby... What's next on the horizon for you?

ABBY J HALL: I’m working on some new projects, stay tuned. I hope all of us can get to playing live again soon…learning to find gratitude in the present moment.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Thanks so much for your time! :)

ABBY J HALL: Thank you!!
