INTERVIEW WITH... POP ARTIST MADISON OLDS

A chat with Canadian Pop newcomer Madison Olds about her refreshing sound & more!

Hailing from British Columbia pop artist Madison Olds self-described gritty happy pop is making waves. Olds has already released two singles earlier in the year, ‘Best Part of Me’ and ‘3’s A Crowd’. Her latest track ‘Bad Thing’, follows suit of her second single, ‘3’s A Crowd’. Where Olds taps into a similar vibe and sexual tension in storytelling. Madison chatted with me about her new music, songwriting in Nashville, and much more. you can read below.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: To start... How are you doing? How have you adjusted to being a creative in a COVID world?

MADISON OLDS: I am doing really well actually! I started out the beginning of the pandemic by going back home to spend some time with my family. Both of my parents are musical, so we played around with lots of music and got back to having fun. Things are a little different now as I am back on my own and trying to adapt to virtual sessions with other creatives. I feel like this year has been incredible in that I have been able to work with people I wouldn’t have been able to before if it weren’t for the use of virtual sessions. It took some time to snap out of my sad 2020 slump, but I am now finding my creativity and inspiration again.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Your newest single “Bad Thing” is immediately catchy. How did this single come together? What was the creative process like?

MADISON OLDS: I remember sitting in the studio with Ryan Worsley and Sophia Danai with the line ‘If I’m gonna do a bad thing I’m gonna do you’ running through my head. I shared it thinking it would be a starting place to come up with some other ideas and we all just latched to it. Ryan started to play a little beat and it all snowballed from there. Because the topic was fun and flirty, we had no problem letting all of our imaginations wonder and we wrote the song pretty quickly. It’s one of my favourites only because it is so cheeky, and we had such a great time putting the story together.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: You wrote your first single release ‘Best Part Of Me’ after an extended solo trip to Nashville. How do you think Nashville and that trip influenced your songwriting and in particular this track?

MADISON OLDS: Nashville was my first ever intro to REAL song writing. I learned how to be confident and push the boundaries with ideas. I used to be so scared to share an idea because I was worried it would be bad, but I learned in Nash, that no idea is bad and that it all leads to the song being the best it possibly can be. I spent a lot of time in Nashville, and it feels like a small piece of my heart will always be there. I really hope that things will let up and I can get my butt back down there again, if only for the fried chicken!

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Switching gears... What’s a book or album that’s made the most impact on your life?

MADISON OLDS: Back to Black by Amy Winehouse was kind of my first album that I would listen to on repeat and never grow tired of. I had tons of records growing up that I loved like World Clique by Deee-Lite and Bad by Michael Jackson, but Amy really affected me differently. I remember sitting on the floor listening to her heart felt lyrics but incredibly catchy melodies and thinking music has way more meaning and soul than a lot of us give it credit. I think it’s easy to get caught up in ambiguity when it comes to pop, but at the end of the day, music is a language and sometimes you gotta SAY something.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: If you could write a song about any fictional world in pop culture what world would you choose and why?

MADISON OLDS: I’m a sucker for fantasy and magical stories. To this day, Harry Potter is played almost weekly. But if I were to write a song about some fictional world, I feel like I would pick Vampire Diaries. There was so much lust and betrayal in that show that I think the songs could be super cool. Like imagine if Billie Eilish wrote a song about vampires. I Think the internet would actually explode haha.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: How do you feel that social media has played a part in your growth as an artist?

MADISON OLDS: I used to despise social media and having to maintain a certain image or brand. It felt so unnatural to me and fake. But as I grew up and started to care a little less about my ‘Image’ in a fashion sort of sense, I realised social media is the most incredible tool ever. I have spent my last year on Tik Tok and am constantly blown away at how quickly some one’s video can influence the music charts and trending songs. A friend of mine, for example, posted a song she had released a year ago and it blew up taking her to viral 50 charts at spot number 4. I think as soon as we stop getting caught up with keeping up with the Jones’, we can remember that social media is a tool to connect people we wouldn’t normally have the chance to connect with. I myself am running a fundraiser campaign on my Tik Tok, and we are seeing numbers that I know I wouldn’t be seeing if it were just up to word of mouth. It’s important we don’t take it too seriously and beat ourselves up for it, but to have fun and see it as an opportunity to grow, not as a tool for comparison.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What's your pick for album of the year for 2020?

MADISON OLDS: I would say Halsey's Maniac only because I think she is a complete Bad a** and I can only aspire to be as talented and humble as her!

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: To end, I wanted to do a quick lightning round of this or that questions. So...

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Morning Bird or Night Owl?

MADISON OLDS: Night Owl.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Digital or Vinyl?

MADISON OLDS: Vinyl.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Instagram Reels or Tik Tok?

MADISON OLDS: TIK TOK !!!

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Museum of Movie theater?

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Marvel or DC Comics?

MADISON OLDS: Marvel.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Podcast or Playlist?

MADISON OLDS: Playlist. (BONUS I love playlists that have podcasts in them!)

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Pancakes or Waffles?

MADISON OLDS: Waffles.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Sunset or Sunrise?

MADISON OLDS: Sunrise, because my theory is it’s a new slate every day and the sunrise washes away the darkness giving us light.
