Carly Tefft released a new LP at the tail end of 2020 titled ‘The Songs Past Dark Project’. Tefft shares the songs that defined her 2020 below...

Rising country act and songwriter Carly Tefft has already opened for some established country acts such as Justin Moore and Jimmie Allen. Carly released her debut record last December titled ‘The Songs Past Dark Project’. She also sat compiled a list of her favorite tunes, the ones that defined 2020, which despite all the difficulties turned out to be a pretty big year for her. You can read it all below.

WE WERE ONLY KIDS - McFly:

January 2020: One of my all-time favorite bands from England finally released new music at the end of 2019 and this was immediately my jam from then on…

DAPHNE BLUE - The Band CAMINO

Feb 2020: My car rides during this month were filled with Dunkin Donut’s iced coffees & blasting the ‘tryhard’ record on my 25 minute drive to and from sessions with my producers. I was stoked to realize elements of pop/punk are still very much alive and well in 2020.

WHEN - ACOUSTIC - Carly Tefft

MARCH 2020: Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional helped inspire this one as that song has many memories attached to it, which made me miss people that used to be in my life. However, I came to the conclusion and realized I didn’t miss them; I missed who I thought they were and the idea of them. “When” wrote itself from start to finish at my kitchen counter.

WHEN THE WORLD IS RUNNING DOWN, YOU MAKE THE BEST OF WHAT’S STILL AROUND - The Police

APRIL 2020: Happy 15+ days to slow the spread! I spent my days walking, writing and practicing on my instruments, which include bass. I’ve always wanted to learn this bass line and thought this was the perfect time to learn this song as it fit the moment so well. Sting & The Police are forever an inspiration for my music.

IT WOULD BE YOU - Ben Rector

MAY 2020: I was riding shotgun in my friend Nic’s his truck as we bopped to this on our way for a hike. When I listen to it I realize, you can’t NOT have a smile on your face while listening to this...we all could use a smile :)

DOWN - Mat Kearney

JUNE 2020: I got heat stroke one day being out on a lake way too long (gingers + too much sun = no fun), came home and needed to ‘literally’ cool down & chill out. I hadn’t listened to Mat in a while, but ever since my heat stroke situation I’ve been so happy to enjoy his songs like this one & get inspired.

CAPE COD - Crooked Coast

JULY 2020: I went on my Spotify “discover weekly” and listened to this song without reading the title and fell in love; then found out it is about my home (Cape Cod) and one of my good friend Shaq (who ended up engineering my acoustic record a month later) was their new drummer!

AH MARY - Grace Potter

AUGUST 2020: Finally a real live concert! I went to a drive in show on Cape Cod and it was just Grace and her guitars. One of my favorites she played and SLAYED that night. She’s on my list to collab with one day.

Fire And Flame - Kip Moore

SEPT 2020: Kip just has the grit that never gets old. To me he made a U2-esque song that is reminiscent, yet refreshing.

ILLICIT AFFAIRS - Taylor Swift

OCTOBER 2020: One of my favorite verse melodies by TSwift and overall...It was a tie between this & August both have incredible stories to them that I dove into early fall.

I WISH YOU WELL - Bill Withers

NOVEMBER 2020: Bill has always been one of my go-to artists and this became a jam realizing there’s no need to hold onto negative feelings, etc because once you wish someone well, it sets you free as well.

A ROCK - HARDY

DECEMBER 2020: By far one of the coolest song concepts I’ve ever heard which makes me inspired to go write something just as epic...freaking great writer and artist I hope to collab with one day.
