This week we are highlighting another photographer whose bold and dreamy work I love. We also met at a show. ‘Get To Know’ Devyn Vaughn, the once Los Angeles based music and lifestyle photographer. She is recently made the move to another famous music city… Nashville. So let’s dive a bit into her music industry story and catch up with her along the way!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Hi, Devyn! You recently moved to Nashville from Los Angeles. How has Nashville been?
DEVYN VAUGHN: Nashville has honestly been a challenge for me. I was really excited moving here, but I moved right before the tornado hit and then following the tornado, COVID shut the world down. I wish I got to meet more people here!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Had you a chance to check out or get a feel of Nashville’s music scene? How is it compared to L.A.?
DEVYN VAUGHN: I made it to 3 little shows which gave me the sense of “home” in LA. It’s a super awesome community out here – very tight knight and feels like an amazing space.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Can you tell us your backstory and how you got your start in the music industry and subsequently photography?
DEVYN VAUGHN: I started running a fan account for an artist while I was in college! I actually majored in Early Childhood Education, but felt like something was missing. I got recognition from the artist through running their fan account, that turned into running their street team and helping out on tour and then eventually getting asked to move out to LA! While in LA I was going out to shows and met someone who had a friend that was hiring a digital marketer for their artist roster. I ended up getting the best mentor this way. They were amazing at marketing, strategy, creatives, and photos. I started taking photos by asking to photograph shows for artists on my roster and assisting my mentor with shoots.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Why did you gravitate towards music and lifestyle photography? What are your favorite things about each?
DEVYN VAUGHN: I love it because I think music is the one thing that is constant in life and always there for you. I loved being able to capture the artist living their best life while fans are also living their best life. I love how it gets to be part of their story. It’s amazing doing what I love capturing others doing what they love.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What advice would you give to young women in particular who want to work in music/concert photography?
DEVYN VAUGHN: Don’t be afraid to reach out and networking is so important! It’s also a constant learning process.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: So, Let’s talk gear! What gear do you use?
DEVYN VAUGHN: I use a canon T6i. Not the “best” camera, but it’s the photographer and their style that makes the photos. My favorite lenses are my “nifty 50” and sigma art 24-70. I also am constantly using prisms and fractals. Some of my favorites are from Future Eyes and Spektrem Effects.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Is there a band or artist that you want would love to photograph or work with that you haven’t yet?
DEVYN VAUGHN: I would love to photograph Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and Halsey.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Who and what are some of the biggest influences on your photography?
DEVYN VAUGHN: Naserin Bogado, Kate Scott, Anna Lee, Skyler Barberio, Jon Hoeg
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What was the most memorable show you’ve shot thus far?
DEVYN VAUGHN: Taylor Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour ❤️
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: How have you had to adjust in the pandemic as a creative?
DEVYN VAUGHN: I’ve been struggling hard with this. I feel like I’ve had zero motivation or inspiration. I’ve been trying to go back to old photos and re-editing them as my style evolves! I also forced myself to try and be creative by doing self portraits.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: How do you see our industry coming back from COVID-19 and the pandemic?
DEVYN VAUGHN: Stronger than ever! I’m nervous since it’s been so long since I’ve shot, I hope it’s kind of like getting back on a bike, ha. I don’t think any of us will take live shows for granted again.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: And… last question, what is the one photo you are most proud of?
DEVYN VAUGHN: I can’t pick!
I couldn’t pick just one either! 😉 Next week we go across the pond and meet London-based session vocalist and singer, Bim Amoako. Some of you may recognize her…
