BASTILLE RETURN WITH FUTURE POP SINGLE “DISTORTED LIGHT BEAM”

To the casual listener on the surface level, the new Bastille track is immediately catchy and makes you want to dance. The British quartet make their official return to the music scene on a new label (Republic Records), with a new look, and fresh sound for this new era. “Distorted Light Beam” captures the mix of nostalgia, hope fullness, and limitless possibilities coming out of a dark age. It is the future wave meats disco-pop bop for the ages. A true contender for the song of the summer. Seemingly capturing a feeling we all have coming out of heart-wrenching pandemic but feeling the need to readjust to life as fast or as slow as one could handle. Know whether that was the song Bastille set out to writer they did with all of the pumping synths, killer bass lines, and textured layers it just hits and hard. You can hear the major inspiration from French Disco, 90s Euro Pop, and even 80s new wave. All of these sounds which have somehow found their way to our ears in some way (i.e. The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, or now Ed Sheeran).

It is significant to note the bands openness to collaborate with outside creatives is prevalent on the last few releases. Once known for keeping a tight-knit and small team around them which included this tracks co producer Mark Crew. “Distorted Light Beam” was also co-written/produced with Pop hitmakers Ryan Tedder of One Republic and Marty Maro. It also has mixing and mastering done by Mark Spike Stent and Chris Gehringer respectively. For anyone that follows Bastille or is a huge fan knows that Frontman Dan Smith always seems to have a dark undercurrent somewhere. This time it shows up in the accompanying music video which gave off heavy Ready Player One or Black Mirror vibes. Lyrically, Bastille’s use of clever wordplay bring to the forefront a myriad of theories or interpretations within the track. Most notably the title “Distorted Light Beam”. While I’ll let the “Stans” duke it out on the theories. I can agree on this... It all rounds out to be a damn good Pop song with the band consistently evolving and creating a new sound and vibe perfect for our post-pandemic life.
