GUEST BLOG: MADDOX JONES SHARES THE SONGS THAT INSPIRED HIS 'BELIEVE IT' ALBUM MAKING PROCESS

These are the songs that inspired Maddox Jones during his 'Believe It' album recording sessions!

Last time I heard from Pop Singer-Songwriter Maddox Jones here at TRB was in August of 2020 when Jones has just released his 'Headspace' EP and I sat down with him to discuss that and more. Now in 2022 fresh off the release of his 'Believe It' album. I asked Maddox about the music that his listened to the most and has inspired him during the album making process. You can read about his picks below and get some insight into the now Glasgow based artist on his creative process for this album sessions. There's even a playlist already already made and attached for your listening pleasure.

"Lover" - Listened to a lot of Taylor Swift and love the playful lyrics on this one. The sparse production and echoey drums really create a vibe. You can hear some of this vibe on "Beautiful Soul."

"Champagne Problems" - love this tune, the lyrics are really clever. The main thing I get from Taylor Swift's songs is the conversational lyric within the twist in the lyrics. I spent a lot of walks during lockdown listening to Taylor.

"Thinking About You" - Reminds me of being a student, this is one of my favourite Radiohead songs, I love the honest storytelling and the simplicity of the guitar and the chords, it’s a really lovely tune. I’ve channeled some of this honesty into tracks like beautiful soul on the record.

"Take My Breath" - what a banger. The Weeknd’s production and lyrics are on point. This track was an inspiration for the production of "Magic."

"Higher Power" - Coldplay is one of my all time faves. I wanted the drums on magic to sound like this and the general dreamy feel. I love how Coldplay evolves from album to album.

"Enjoy the Silence" - Depeche Mode are a band that started my love of dark pop songs. I was introduced to them by some friends I was in a band with before I went to university. ‘Words like violence, break the silence’ - one of the best pop lyrics ever. "Make Me Yours" on my album is influenced by this song.

"Skinny Love" - Whenever I play any covers, I’ll always give this a whirl. Love his voice and lyrical style, such a nice warm feel to this song.

"Little Bit Of Love" - What a bombastic, massive pop tune. Tom Grennan is such a cool pop star. I love the production and vocal melodies on this tune. My record has been influenced by the immediacy of this track.

"Use Somebody" - This Kings of Leon song is one of my all-time favourites. The drums and guitar on my track ‘Power’ are influenced by this song. I love the massive backing vocals and the huge anthemic nature of this record.

"Want You Back" - Haim is like the coolest band ever, right? I remember seeing them at Primavera Festival a few years ago. The way they use guitars, that super funky, choppy vibe; I used on ready to better in the pre choruses. It’s got that 70s feel to it but also sounds super modern.

"Seventeen Going Under" - What a tune!!! This is just a great great piece of music. There’s no standard structure here, it just tells a story; it reminds me a bit of Springsteen, but at the same time sounds really British. The honesty of this song has informed the whole of my record. This is one of those tunes that don’t come along very often.

"Get Lucky" - This tune is just a party. "Somewhere There’s A Plan" on my record is influenced by Nile Rodgers guitar, and that 70s bounce. To be fair everything about this record I love. This is a bonafide hit record.

"Watermelon Sugar" - When did Harry Styles get so cool? This has such a summer vibe to it. I listened to this record quite a bit last year. Great melodies and the lyrics are just pretty unique. I love pop music and my record isn’t afraid to tell you that.

"It Might Take A Woman" - This is my mates band, Christian - And this track has a vibe. Love the groove and the melody on this. Christian played saxophone somewhere there’s a plan on my record. Big love to G. Hood

"Pineapple" - When creating, it's as much about taking time out to reflect as it is getting stuck in. This is a track I listen to when I want to get away from what I’m working on and escape. Blue Lab Beats are so talented and create Nu-Jazz. This record is what I listen to when I’m chilling.
