INTERVIEW WITH... OSLO SINGER-SONGWRITER BEHARIE WHERE HE TALKS ABOUT HIS NEW SINGLE 'SIMPLE MISTAKE'

Meet Beharie he's the Olso-based Singer-Songwriter making waves and building a name for himself with his slow burning blend of Soulful Folk-Pop tunes. Born Christian Beharie the artist who grew up in a household rooted in music, often spent his youth with his four siblings singing in the choir, learning numerous instruments, or even playing in many bands. All things which have helped him in his current solo career, where his latest EP, ‘Beharie // Beharie’ was nominated for a Spellemann, a Norwegian Grammy award. In my interview below get to know a bit the up incoming artist, his latest single "Simple Mistake", and how embracing vulnerability hasn't lead him astray.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Can you introduce yourself and give us a peek into your backstory? Did you pick music or did music pick you?

BEHARIE: Hey! My name is Beharie, but my friends call me Christian. I’m a Norwegian singer-songwriter and I make music with an indie soul - landscape. I feel like music chose me when I was a little kid. I remember it being so captivating and addictive, just hitting every nerve in my body. I grew up in a family of seven, a household filled with a lot of noise. All the time. Most of the noise being music. Singing, playing instruments, and records. The addiction started early and hasn’t stopped yet. Hope it never will.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Let’s talk about your latest single ‘Simple Mistake’ It's such a quietly powerful single. How did this track come together?

BEHARIE: It started in my living room. Sitting on the couch one morning, just jamming on my guitar. Until I found a vibe I really liked. At first, it kind of felt like a feel-good song, but the lyrics turned out to be quite bitter, haha. Which I think became a very interesting mix.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What do music and the craft of songwriting mean to you?

BEHARIE: I feel music is a language and channel where I get to tell stories and feelings that don't quite fit in anywhere else. I kind of need it. To express myself fully, and to process the life I was brought into. It’s kind of my daily meditation as well.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Are themes of love and loss something that you feel most comfortable crafting songs and stories? Or is it just telling about human connections and relationships overall?

BEHARIE: I’ve taught myself on the way to be comfortable writing honestly about love, loss, connection, and disconnection. It can feel quite vulnerable. But makes music that feels real.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What has been the best advice given to you as an artist?

BEHARIE: Just sit down and write songs. Don’t wait for inspiration, put yourself into the situation, and sometimes it hits you hard, and sometimes it’s all dry and empty.

And trust your gut feeling. First of all, you are doing it for yourself.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What fictional character do you think would most identify with your sound and artistry?

BEHARIE: Hm. Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter maybe. My music paints the picture of being inside your own head, feeling lost and vulnerable, but also being brave, confident, and fighting for what you believe in. I feel that also is a good description of her.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What was the first record or artist that you fell in love with? What was the last?

BEHARIE: The first album crush I can remember is Chariot by Gavin Degraw. Still love those songs.

The last crush is Designer Aldous Harding

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: And, lastly what’s next on the horizon for you?

BEHARIE: I’m playing a couple of festivals this summer. And also feeling creative, and writing a lot of music. Excited to see where that will end.
