Welcome to edition 6 of ‘Here This Now’. Here we shine a light on the best in new music!
In Edition 6 of this recurring series we’ve got everything from the new collaboration from The Japanese House and Justin Vernon to Dan Croll. It’s been a bit since the last one so expect a bigger list…
The Japanese House // ‘Dionne’
Amber Bain teams up with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver on the track ‘Dionne’. The latest single is off her new EP ‘Chewing Cotton Wood’. A short collection that features some of her most lush experimental sounds to date. ‘Dionne’ is a beautifully lovelorn song with distorted synths and lush harmonies. Vernon’s nearly unrecognizable vocals echoing Bain’s emotional sentiments is the cherry on the top.
FOX JACKSON // ‘Behind Closed Doors’
The London singer-songwriter began his career at an early age playing the role of Billy Elliot. His debut single ‘Behind Closed Doors’ tells of a relationship gone south where one feels shut out. A song inspired by the Nile Rodgers 1980s movie soundtrack for ‘Soup For One’. It’s fueled by his love of many genres of music. ‘Behind Closed Doors’ is jazzy intertwined with elements of pop, soul and even funk. Fox’s songwriting is heartfelt and honest. You can listen to his debut below.
ALUNA // ‘Envious’
British dance artist Aluna returns with ‘Envious’. The fourth release off her upcoming ‘Renaissance’ album. The album is out now on Mad Decent and is the first solo record for the artist known for the duo AlunaGeorge. ‘Envious’ a powerful and soulful dance-pop jam that Aluna self describes as her best ‘cry dance’ song. It’s perfect for the dance floor and getting out of all those emotions. You can view the music video directed by Hamadou Frederic Balde below.
FRANK LEONE // ‘Don’t Want’
The Chicago Rapper’s new single finds the artist in a three minute experimental rap quest. The chopped and screwed vocals take the listener on a trippy ride. He also creates major contrast within the song as his flow ranges is hard-hitting. Musically it’s a smooth R&B and g-funk-influenced sound. It’s all a vibe and is from the rappers upcoming album set for a September release, the first in five years. Check out the track below.
ICONA POP // ‘Feels In My Body’
The newest single from the Swedish pop duo follows two collabs from earlier this year. ‘Feels in My Body’ is a feel-good summer jam perfect for those loud sing-alongs. The frenetic high energy of the dance track echoes in the music video shot by Gustav Stegfors. You can view it below.
MADISON OLDS // ‘3’s A Crowd’
Hailing from British Columbia pop artist Madison Olds new single is an electro-pop gem. After catching the ears of tastemakers and curators with her recent release ‘Best Of Me’. Madison hopes to continue that streak on this latest track and all signs are there she will. As her songwriting chops are in peak form here.
ODARIO // ‘Hot Hot Heat’
‘Hot Hot Heat’ is the insanely fun new single from hip-hop storyteller Odario. On it he fuses rapping and beat poetry to create an exciting sound. Teaming up with singer Kamilah Apong and producer Todor Kobakov to create a soundscape that artfully blends genres. You can hear fluid synths, lush harmonies, echoes of house, and even jazz to create the perfect summer vibe.
LOVE MANSUY // ‘Calm Me Down’
A featured single on Side A from his upcoming EP ‘(món-swee)’. ‘Calm Me Down’ explores the comfort true partnership can provide as well as the challenges. The single is an ode to his real-life partner and mother to his child. Mansuy finds a new home in a diverse array of sounds and textures creating a laid back but super groovy ode to love. The music video captures the song’s emotional vulnerability. Created with creative and childhood friend Quran Squire. You can watch it below.
THE ACCENTS // ‘Talk It Over’
The Indie-Pop Duo of Mathijs Kriebel and Rich Weller release their latest offering. A self-reflective and infectious electro-pop synth hooked number. Co-produced by Valley’s Mike Brandolino the single is off the duo’s forthcoming EP ‘Still The One’. Lyrically the band ponders the mistakes and regrets of the past and the what-ifs of things said. Using gorgeous shimmering synths and groovy 808s to inject the feeling of nostalgia. The Accents implore the listener to invariably learn from the past rather than harp on it. Look for the rap in Japanese which adds an unexpected flair to the track. Listen to it below.
DAN CROLL // ‘Hit Your Limit’
‘Grand Plan’ is the third studio album from British singer-songwriter Dan Croll. It recounts his major move to Los Angeles. Each song from Croll takes us on a 12 month personal and creative journey. Dan’s strong melodies, plaintive vocal delivery, and solid guitar work shine through out. He easily bring us into his emotional narrative and world. My favorite track is ‘Hit Your Limit’. It is hopeful in its intention yet playful in its storytelling. Croll ruminates over the subject of writer’s block and creative fatigue. Many of the songs off ‘Grand Plan’ follow suit. You can stream the new album here and listen to my fave ‘Hit Your Limit’ below.
KEYS N KRATES // ‘Double Dutch’
Toronto natives Key n Krates returns with an epic new song ‘Double Dutch’. This song follows the release of A Beat Tape For Your Friends last year. ‘Double Dutch’ is an instant club banger. A song that finds influences amongst an amalgam of things. Brazilian music, 80s music, tribal, Baile funk, 90s rave, and much more. They seamlessly intertwine all these sounds to create an experimental and boisterous track. You can watch the music video which follows suit below. Expect to hear more from Keys N Krates coming soon.
FLOR // ‘LMHO’
The new single from Alt-Pop quartet Flor (Portuguese for flower) is insanely catchy. A band known for their infectious blend of synth-driven rock and pop melodies. Their sound heard loud and clear on this new track. They recently released a super trippy and very colorful new music video for the track. Which director CJ Sweet shot during quarantine in the band’s hometown of Hood River, OR. You can see the finished product below.
