Saturn Lane’s debut ‘Want You Bad‘ is out now!
Saturn Lane is a young singer-songwriter in pop music. Lane, A New York based artist just released her new single entitled ‘Want You Bad‘. It’s an electro-pop bop that captures feelings falling for a crush and desire. The Staten Island native is already finding her voice in a super commanding pop market. Growing up in a musical family, Lane was dancing and singing early on. As a teenager she had joined a band, was co-writing songs with local artists, and had appeared on a Bebe Rehxa MTV special. Her father is a self taught rock influenced guitarist and her late grandfather was rock radio DJ Jack Spector. I recently interviewed Saturn Lane over email. We talked about her debut single, musical influences, and what’s next on the horizon for her as an artist.
SATURN LANE: Hi, The Reclusive Blogger!
SATURN LANE: Thank you so much for taking an interest in me and my music 🙂 I’m very grateful for that and for this interview!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: How did your new single “Want You Bad” come together? What was the writing process like?
SATURN LANE: “Want You Bad” was written and recorded two years ago. I wanted it to be called “Want You Back” after an experience I had in my life at the time, but at the time 5SOS had a song on the radio with that same title, and I figured their song was so awesome that I’m just gonna pick a different title. I picked a play on words, “Want You Bad.” I decided to channel my inner playfulness and confidence as a woman to get a little intimate. The writing process was super fun. I wrote the song alone, and my producer helped me tweak the notes used in the melodies or where certain parts should go. It was written rather quickly, and my favorite part was writing the bridge and adlibs!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What’s a normal creative and writing process like for you? Has it changed since lockdown?
SATURN LANE: A normal creative writing process for me is honestly anything but normal in the sense that it is often spontaneous. I find that when I try to force myself to write, it never comes out as good as when the ideas hit naturally. I need inspiration or an intense level of emotion involved, otherwise I’m just writing a subpar song at best. I often get some of my best ideas at the most inconvenient places, usually in public or in a place where I can’t grab my phone to record it!
SATURN LANE: (Cont): Lockdown has definitely changed my creative process, since most of it became virtual collaborations when writing songs, instead of in the same room. There are definitely pros and cons to that, but I’d say the biggest changes in my creative process due to the lockdown is that finding inspiration has to be from a purposeful place since outside, everyday inspirations aren’t available as much as they were before lockdown.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Are you working on any new music or projects currently?
SATURN LANE: Yes, I’m always working on new music, concepts, and ideas. I’m practicing my writing, even if I don’t ever record those songs. I’m trying to figure out what exactly I’d like to say in my music, and how to get there!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Throwing in a few fun ones here… If you could live in any fictional universe, which would you choose?
SATURN LANE: Oooh, I love that! I’d say I’d love to live in the world of Walter White from Breaking Bad. His life is just so crazy and I’d love to see how that would work in real life.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What’s one album you could listen to over and over from start to finish?
SATURN LANE: Ooh, good question. I’d say “Thank U, Next” by Ariana Grande.
I wanted this song to be playful and upbeat, and make people feel sexy. A song they can jam to and just have a good time. It’s about being tempted by someone and how into them you are, and just going for it despite if it’s the best decision or not. It’s just living spontaneously and living freely.Saturn Lane on her new single ‘Want You Bad’
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What’s your earliest musical memory?
SATURN LANE: My earliest musical memory is writing songs behind my couch in my basement at maybe 8 or 9 years old. I used to make songs and would be so shy for people to know that, so I would be very secretive about it in my home. Also, I remember performing in school shows in elementary school! It was lots of fun. I also remember trying out for the band in 4th grade and being so nervous about it!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Who has had the biggest influence on you as a singer and songwriter?
SATURN LANE: As a singer, I’d say Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Adele, Christina Grimmie, Demi Lovato. Lots of powerhouse vocalists! As a songwriter, definitely Taylor Swift, Bebe Rexha, Sia, Katy Perry.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What’s one song you could listen to over and over from start to finish?
SATURN LANE: “Ghostin” by Ariana Grande. So, so raw and just gorgeous.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Are there any artists that have been “On Repeat” for you lately? What music have you been listening to?
SATURN LANE: Yes, I love Ariana, Cardi B, Doja Cat, etc. Also I’m really digging “Leave Me Alone” by NF. I love pop, hip hop, dance…
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: And what’s next on the horizon for you?
SATURN LANE: Lots of new music, lots of songwriting! Hopefully playing shows safely when COVID-19 gets under control. Working everyday to inspire people and connect through music 🙂
