Hey Violet (Singer Rena Lovelis, her sister and drummer Nia Lovelis, Lead Guitarist Casey Moreta, and Bassist Iain Shipp), the four piece Alternative Pop band is back with a fun new single titled “Better By Myself”. It’s the first release from the band since their 2017 debut album “From The Outside”. The song is a catchy, and groovy pop rock number featuring a hooky sing along style chorus. The subject matter of relationships and freedom is albeit nothing new but very relatable, makes “Better By Myself” perfect for Pop radio. Maya B is the Los Angeles based R&B singer and songwriter recently signed to Capitol Records
I chatted with Maya Babout her latest single “Dollar to a Diamond“, music, touring, and even her favorite children’s book …
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Red Vines or Twizzlers?
MAYA B: Red vines. I have them in every green room.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: For my readers at The Reclusive Blogger can you us how you got started as singer and songwriter? Who and what inspired you to take that journey?
MAYA B: I’ve been writing and singing ever since I can remember honestly. I fell in love with music when I was 5 and started making music when I was around 7. What made me get into music was my mom putting my sisters and I into a girl group. As time went by I started taking it very seriously.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Let’s talk about your current single “Dollar To A Diamond”. Can you tell me more about the creative and writing process behind it?
MAYA B: Yeah, so Hydrate (upcoming producer) and Soulshock made this track one night together and played it for me the next day. I fell in love with it and started writing. I wrote and we recorded “Dollar To A Diamond” in a single day.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: You not only also express yourself as an singer-songwriter but in other art forms as well. What’s a typical creative process like for you?
MAYA B: I don’t have a creative process set in stone honestly. It’s ever-changing because I hate structure haha. The only thing that’s inevitable when I create is: I like looking at photos or colors when I write a song. I like listening to music when I paint or draw.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Since you are currently on tour. What are three must have items for you?
MAYA B: My beats headphones because I’m an antisocial fuck. My iPad because I draw my digital art on there. And my lucky pants because lucky pants are a must.
TRB: Switching gears now … What was your favorite children’s book as a kid?
MAYA B: ‘No David, No’ for sure!
TRB: Are there any artists that have been “On Repeat” for you guys as a band lately? What music have you been digging?
MAYA B: We’ve been jamming to Juice WRLD and we all really love jazz so the guys recently put me on to Gretchen Parlato. I’ve been listening to a lot of XXTENTACION, King Krule, Brigitte Fontaine, and Celebration.
TRB: And what’s next for you, Maya B?
MAYA B: I’m gearing up to release my EP. I’m super excited for everyone to see some different sides of me. I’m also getting ready to drop the “Dollar to a diamond” video.
TRB: Anything else you would like to add? Thank you for your time!
Alison Wonderland hopes to find ‘Peace‘ on this heartbreaking new track
‘Peace‘ is the catchy and emotional new tune from DJ, Producer, and Singer-SongwriterAlison Wonderland. Released today with an equally stunning video from Venice, California based creative duo Cue the Bird who helped bring her vision to life, along with Jake Kasheta who produced it. The visuals capture the song well. The struggle to find solid ground after a relationship goes wrong and ends. It’s an intense internal journey, the juxtaposition of light and dark, and hope and despair. Alison Wonderland takes the listener on a strong emotional journey on “Peace” hoping we all come out in the end with at least a little bit of it. Check out the video for “Peace” below and link to stream and buy. Also links to Alison Wonderland socials and official website.
Hey, everyone yesterday I got the chance to photograph the concert by singer-songwriter and pop star Olivia O’Brien (with opening act Sofya Wang). Although the name may not sound very familiar yet.You have definitely heard at least one of her songs. With tracks like “RIP”which has G-Eazy on it and “Empty”, and most notably “hate u love u” which she sings with GNASH.Olivia O’Brien is definitely on the rise and her show at The Roxy (which was a very sweaty and fun one btw) was only solid proof. A short image gallery is below!
The Bastille boys have done it again, my favorite band has a knack for surprising us fans with music out of the blue and in this case beautiful shot soundcheck videos! If you haven’t seen Bad News it’s linked.
So with only a day of warning my favorite South London based band released the amazingly cinematic live performance version of their latest single Quarter Past Midnight. It was filmed during soundcheck at the Royal Albert Hall in London on the bands’ ReORCHESTRATED tour.
The video not only beautifully shot but well edited is interspersed with clips from the actual live show. All which help to not only capture the high energy and freneticism of a Quarter Past Midnight but a Bastille live show as well. It also features a bigger glimpse into the choir and the orchestra that was a major part of the ReORCHESTRATED tour for those who could not be apart. But don’t only take my word for it. Go watch now below …
…We filmed this during soundcheck on the day of our R.A.H. gig. It was probably one of my favourite days & I still can’t believe how lucky we were being able to play with that many brilliant musicians. Hope you like it.
“The Bastille boys are back with a ‘Quarter Past Midnight’, a very British and much needed bop for the Summer”
So today is a big day for me being a Bastille fan. The band, which consists of Dan Smith, Will Farquarson, Chris “Woody” Wood, and Kyle Simmons, just released their first single off their upcoming record (no release date yet, but soon). The single “Quarter Past Midnight” premiered on BBC Radio 1 as one of Annie Mac’s Hottest record. Lead singer, Dan Smith had been filling in for her with an actual BBC Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw all week.
The single “Quarter Past Midnight” is a beautiful and major change of pace stylistically for the Bastille. With the lyrics exploring the themes of crazy yet fun nights out. The times where most of us have already retired for the night or heading home to do so. The song explores in a unique way the alternate life of people who are not home, they are just getting started at a “Quarter Past Midnight”. It’s theme that Bastille is not a stranger to, it’s a theme that they truly find home in thus taking it to a more truly poetic and universal level.
The music still very much Bastille and with all of the lovely Bastille quirks intact reminds me of late 80s to early 90s Brit Rock/Pop from bands like Placebo, Oasis, Blur and My Bloody Valentine in some places. With heavy hits of Europop and Dance spiking in between as the music on the track slides up and down in tempo. Dan’s vocals match perfectly going from a beautiful frenetic pace, to a softer tone, to high falsetto all in the span of only a few seconds. Sounds just like a night out right? The bits of guitar add grit and yes somehow the band managed to add their signature movie quotes into the song. Although I can barely make them out.
All in all this is a fantastic start to the Bastille era. They have made so many fans (including me) very happy. I cannot wait to hear the rest of the record and see what a “Quarter Past Midnight” music video looks like.
P.S. Major props to the guys for the epic Joy Division reference in the opening lines!
