Interview With Rhythm Tribe On Hispanic Heritage, Music & More

Rhythm Tribe is a multi-generational family band comprising Thomas Guzman-Sanchez, Mason Guzman-Sanchez, and Brisa Guzman-Sanchez, along with other close family friends rounding out the ensemble. The band fuses Latin Rock, Funk, Bomba, and Neo Soul to create this unique fusion and vibrant fun soundscape. After sold-out concerts in 2023, the band played two shows in Los Angeles at the Roxy and Viper Room this year. Their latest single ‘One Day At A Time’ is out now.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Hi, Thanks for speaking with me! So, How has 2024 been for each of you as a band? What’s something you’ve been the most proud of?

RHYTHM TRIBE: It has been such a great experience starting with the new sound and then performing at the Roxy Theater in Hollywood. To connect in person with our supporters is incredible. Thomas recalls, “recognizing how to connect with yourself through music is a huge challenge.” Mason said, “Discovering emotion through the Handpan was fun.” And Brisa said, “Spending time alone to work on yourself is different than being alone.” We are most proud of our band members. Karthik Suresh on Bass, Esau Garcia on hybrid Drums/Percussion, Mason on Vocals, Guitar and Handpan, Brisa on Vocals and Thomas on Vocals, Guitar and Cuatro. This group is a real pleasure to play with.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Can we start by discussing the origin story of your band Rhythm Tribe’s origins since it’s a generational family band?

RHYTHM TRIBE: The group started six years ago when we decided to do a family recording session. That session produced our first album, GENERATIONS. The first single, “You Are The One” went to #28 on Billboard. That was when we realized that we had something special. Last year we released our second album NEXT LEVEL. We are releasing our third album TEA FOR FIVE in December and our new single is #150 with a bullet on Billboard. Being a family with over a 100-year musical legacy is very motivational. Now that we are able to play live, it is so exciting.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What would you say are some of Rhythm Tribe’s biggest influences?

RHYTHM TRIBE: Andre Segovia, Puerto Rican Rhythms, The System of the Down, Bill Withers, James Brown, and Whitney Houston.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What three words would you pick to describe Rhythm Tribe sound who hasn’t heard it?

RHYTHM TRIBE: Latino, Dipped, and R&B.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What is the most challenging aspect of working with your family? The most rewarding?

RHYTHM TRIBE: The biggest challenge is to be able to listen to each other. Just because you love one another doesn’t mean it’s easy to be heard. The most rewarding is when we play together, we can communicate with each other without saying a word. This is a blessing.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: As National Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, being a band that showcases diversity in many ways. What does diversity mean to you and how do you see the music and entertainment evolving over the next five, or ten years?

RHYTHM TRIBE: Creating a Latin fusion sound is how we are celebrating our family. By infusing our music with a Neo soul feel, it takes the music to a new place. We look forward to seeing how the music grows and how people are open to new music. We hope that people will continue to evolve with us into the future.

Interview With Rhythm Tribe

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What’s one important skill that you think every artist in the music industry should have?

RHYTHM TRIBE: The artist needs to know artistry and business. This industry called the music business is actually several separate entities. Each is like a vicious gang fight, with the gatekeepers not letting anyone in. The artist needs to know how to kick ass. Both tenacity and stamina are key for all artists need to have.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: We’re coming up on the tail end of the year for 2024 do you have a favorite album and song from the year?

RHYTHM TRIBE: We are looking forward to our first single “Holding Onto The Night” going up on the radio charts nationally. Our new album TEA FOR FIVE is our favorite.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Lastly, what is up next for your band?

RHYTHM TRIBE: We have two songs up for Grammy consideration: “Holding Onto The Night” for Best R&B Performance and “One Day At A Time” for Best Global Performance. We have the song “You’ll Be There / Estaras Alli” up for Latin Grammy consideration for Best Tropical Performance. Live concerts at the Whisky-A-Go-Go and Coachella are how we will start the New Year.
