It was a chilly Monday night in downtown Los Angeles (July 24th) when fans of all ages gathered at the Clive Davis Theater nestled inside the Grammy Museum to see Canadian R&B singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez. The intimate concert attracted around 200 of her most devoted fans after an in-depth conversation and interview conducted by Victoria Monet. Jessie Reyez is on tour promoting her new album, PAID IN MEMORIES.
The setlist featured seven songs, and only Reyez and her acoustic guitarist were onstage. The intimate setup and stripping down of instruments allowed her vocals to shine fully. Her vocals felt exposed, powerful, and full of emotion, each song taking her right back to the feeling, even if it hurt. Reyez opened the set with Nights Will Never Have, and Goliath. The latter a song she describes as one of her happiest, as it’s inspired by family, or more specifically, her niece.
Then other tracks like Beggin For Luv had her exposed and vulnerable with lyrics pleading a lazy lover for the right kind of love, and the superbly cheeky JEANS are off her new record, PAID IN MEMORIES. Jessie and her guitarist (who was fabulous by the way) closed out her set with the all-Spanish track, Sola, and CUDN’T BE ME, a track which she did twice, the first time alone with guitar, and then with guitarist back onstage, where Jessie proceeded to go out into the audience to sing and have fans sing along. When she got up for this last song, handing the microphone over and getting in close, her fans knew every word. For some, a smaller setting like this can be too intimate, but for Reyez, the acoustic small set allowed her vocals to shine and flow. Her stage banter, anecdotes about her life, and songs highlighted her witty, charismatic personality. Grammy-winner Victoria Monet led the conversation and interview portion, where they discussed her life, beginnings, career, creativity, and much more.
