Paramore - “This Is Why”

After a four year break since After Laughter and Hayley’s “Simmering” solo work (see what I did there). Paramore are back with a new insanely groovy new song and sound taking bits and pieces of influences from everywhere. 60s beat, 70 soul/funk, The Beatles, 90 Indie, and British naughties bands like Bloc Party. A band which Hayley has been quoted as saying was big influence for this new album and era.

Antonio Sanchez (feat. Trent Reznor + Atticus Ross ) -“I Think We’re Past That Now”

Freddie Gibbs -“Dark Hearted”

Another banger from Freddie Gibbs this time featuring beautifully laid out minimalist production from James Blake. It’s all set against a darkly surrealist animated music video.

ARCTIC MONKEYS - “BODY PAINT”

The second offering from the bands’ forthcoming album “The Car”. The song oozes 60s influences like the use of orchestral elements and layered melodies and harmonies a la The Beatles. Those nods to past give the track a certain air of nostalgia all while firmly planted in the roots of todays Alternative Rock sound. Plus frontman Alex Turner vocals have never sounded this strong.

To see if there’s still a trace of “Body Paint” go here

JONAH YANO - "leslianne"

If there was ever a song that could be called short and sweet (it’s under 2 minutes). This is the perfect song. The track which is the second helping from Yano’s forthcoming sophomore album Portrait of a Dog’ finds the artist gracefully musing over a girl finding her way home. Along the way Yano fuses his voice with his piano work and it’s exquisite.

SAM SMITH + Kim PETRAS - “UNHOLY”

Pop balladeer Sam Smith does a complete 360 and changes up his sound in his new collab with eclectic pop singer Kim Petras. In the racy music video for the new track, appearances aren’t always as they seem and things quickly get… well “Unholy”.

THE BAD PLUS - “SELF-TITLED”

Then there’s the visionary Jazz group The Bad Plus. A group redefining the sonics of Jazz through their unique skill set and pedigrees. Stream their self-titled album here

MEET ME @ THE ALTAR - “SAY IT (TO MY FACE)”

The WOC pop-punk trio returns with the first offering from the bands’ forthcoming debut album. A spunky diss track to all the haters from the group who has come to have a love/hate relationship with the internet these days. From the gang vocals in the chorus, fast riffs, loud guitars, hard hitting drums, and huge hooks. These girls are ready for the limelight and representation in pop-punk is sorely needed.

Stream the song here, watch the music video here

PRECIOUS PEPALA - “LOOKING FOR TROUBLE”

Rising English act Precious Pepala is already making waves with her impressive voice and storytelling. At only 17 her latest single “Looking For Trouble” tackles a tale as old as time, but with a refreshing honesty, Millennial/Gen Z relatability, and a soulful pop vocal delivery beyond her years. Precious is certainly one to watch.

Madison Cunningham - “Revealer”

Revealer is the new album by artist, singer, and songwriter Madison Cunningham. While her sound may feel familiar with its heavy notes of nostalgia plucked throughout. Her vocals, lyrical delivery and choice in words and wordplay is all fresh, she’s throws in her many influences from Jazz, Pop, and even Alternative Rock. Her Folk-Americana sound is uniquely her as she often touches upon the anxieties of her generation, the hopes, the fears, the highs and lows. Which is what I asked her about when I got the chance during a small presser last month. What has been the most rewarding experience for her so far? Despite Grammy noms, doing a NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and performing on late night shows. Cunningham said opening up for Harry Styles was it. She was in awe of how gracious his fans were even taking the time to learn her songs. Although, I have a feeling some were already fans.

To stream “Revealer” go here

Duncan Lawrence - “Electric Life”

While the “Arcade” singer new single subject matter is quite heavy. It’s song about loved ones who have passed on and the transformation of deep sorrow to hope about it. Duncan masks the sorrowful nature of the song in dynamic, warm, 70s inspired sonics. The artist creating what is ultimately a bombastic tune.

You watch the music video which he directed himself here.

Buzzy electro-pop band VALLEY have an infectious and optimistic pop anthem out titled The Problem Song”. Non-binary Bedroom Pop artist Khai Dreams returns with a new track and animated music video for their vibe heavy track “Bugs”. Queer singer-songwriter Darren Hayes (who you might recognize from the 90s band Savage Garden) makes statement in the power of vulnerability laying reclamation to the word “Homosexual” by naming his new album that title. Vancouver artist EKKSTACY drops his new album Misery”, an album that explores Alternative music and dark side of it and life. You can also watch the music video for his latest single “I’m So Happy” here. For fans of the pop vocal or the group Pentatonix you can check out Scott Hoying’s debut track “Mars” here.

Lastly, there’s new music out from pop artists like North London’s Natalie Shay, Salt Lake City’s Addison Grace, and Canada’s Rêve. The last three all have a penchant for great storytelling that under pin either catchy beats, great pop hooks or euphoric melodies.

HEAR THIS NOW: EDITION 11 OF THE MUSIC SOUNDCHECK

This is edition 11 of the 'Hear This Now' music roundup at TRB.

Edition 11 is here of Hear This Now, and it's been a while! In this roundup, we've got everything from Pale Waves to the Arkells (feat. LIGHTS), Mabel and Bastille to TDE's Reason, and Beyonce's new era. 'The Hard Way' is the latest release from the Pale Waves' upcoming 'Unwanted' album due August 12th. The single takes inspiration from a traumatic event in lead vocalist Heather's childhood. A regret that's stayed with her for not doing more for a girl who was bullied and wound up taking her own life. This somber retrospective track is a haunting reminder to always stick up for others.

Listen up here.

Bastille - 'Revolution'

This song is officially the first taste from Bastille's new expanded edition of their fourth album, 'Give Me The Future. The new expanded edition 'GIVE ME THE FUTURE + DREAMS OF THE PAST' is out on August 26th via Republic Records. It expounds upon the band's futuristic dreamscape meets fever dream playground upping the ante by creating a choose your musical adventure from three worlds. You have the origin story of 'GIVE ME THE FUTURE' or the nostalgia of 'DREAMS OF THE PAST'. Lastly, you can pick dance floor and heartbreak with 'OTHER PEOPLES HEARTACHE'

This deeper dive also includes a new song titled, 'Revolution'. A track whose intro into the Bastille canon is marked with a quiet ferocity, continuing the band's quest and thirst for experimentation in their sound. One of 'Revolution's highlights is the opening and how meticulously nuanced the track goes from a soft insular ballad to a glitch-pop, r&b flecked dance number. Lyrically the sci-fi-tinged references help to navigate a story of human connection, one that highlights those who help make the world a much more positive place near and far. 'Revolution' makes quite a beautiful statement that feels more like an evolution.

Tritonal + Eric Lumiere - 'Something Beautiful”

'Hold The Girl' is Rina's third release from her forthcoming sophomore LP of the same name and follow up to her critically acclaimed self-titled debut. The track came to fruition after therapy in 2020, highlighting her soaring vocals set to a glitchy progressive house beat. It's evident that the eclectic progressive pop sound she's carefully crafted is candy for our ears.

Mabel - 'Let Them Know (Live) | Vevo Studio Performance'

Another fun VEVO live session is from Pop/R&B Maven Mabel, whose two performances showcase her vocals beautifully, including this slightly scaled-back version of the Disco-tinged R&B number 'Let Them Know. Not only does the song ooze girl power and sass, but so does Mabel and her vocals.

Watch the VEVO session here.

Arkells + Lights - 'Human Being'

Here's a fun late Summer contender for one of the catchiest tracks of this Summer, possibly the year. 'Human Being' is off the Arkells' upcoming September LP, 'Blink Twice'. the Arkells and their bouncy electro-rock rhythms team up with Lights and her effervescent energy and vocals, turning the collaboration into a kinetic burst of fun energy.

Jack White - 'A Madman From Manhattan' (Live from Union Chapel in London)

One of the highlights from Jack White's brand new album, 'Entering Heaven Alive' is this gem of a song and this live performance of the track in London. White performed the entirety of 'Entering Heaven Alive' acoustically at London's Union Chapel. You can watch this performance at the link.

Stream Jack White's latest 'Entering Heaven Alive' here.

Olivia Lunny + Bhad Bhabie - 'Vibe Check'

Canadian Singer-Songwriter Olivia Lunny teams up with Rapper Bhad Bhabie for a laidback Gen Z jam that passes this Millenial editor's "Vibe Check"Lunny's brand of confessional alt-pop still remains the foundation for this breezy R&B-infused track. The slinky melodies, and seductive beat, make under 3-minute song quite the bop.

You can decide for yourself here and see if it also passes your vibe check.

Butcher Brown - 'Unbelievable'

Photo Credit: Butcher Brown by Danielle Barbieri

The Jazz ensemble Butcher Brown drop their third song from their upcoming big band release, Butcher Brown Presents Triple Trey. The song titled 'Unbelievable' follows suit in a succession of dynamic releases from the band in 2022. It's an utterly groovy Jazz reimagining of the Notorious B.I.G song of the same. Watch the rousing live video of this clever reinterpretation from the Butcher Brown band to hear the intricacies at play.

You can also stream it here.

You Me At Six - 'Deep Cuts'

English Rock quartet You Me At Six returns with the announcement of the band's eighth studio album, 'Truth Decay'. The single 'Deep Cuts' is full steam ahead in its kinetic stadium rock energy. Something You Me At Six is quite known overseas, but with the heavier imagery in the music video and what seems to be an ever-progressing band. You Me At Six emo, pop-punk sound and giving it a modern yet grungy twist. The end game has clearly been upended and changed for this band.

You can watch the new video here or stream the song here.

The Lindas Linda - 'Lost In Thought'

The Linda Lindas are on fire right now. The band who signed to Epitaph Records dropped their debut record earlier this year titled 'Growing Up'. Along this journey, many in the punk community have taken this young band under their wings, including members of pretty famous punk bands like Bikini Kill. They team up with Kathi Wilcox of Bikini Kill to write the track 'Lost In Thought' for the Land Trust: Benefit For NEFOC charity album.

Listen to the song here. Watch the music video here

Marcus Mumford - 'Grace'

Following the release of the lead-off track, 'Cannibal' and a music video directed by Steven Spielberg (!!!) shot in black & white on iPhone. We got a first taste of the sound and direction of where the Mumford and Sons frontman could go. The song held bits of his classic folk sound. Now with the release of his first single, 'Grace' from his debut solo venture (self-titled). The artist digs into deeper emotions and more feral ground, leaving behind Folk for a swampy, gritty, Country Rock sound through the production of Blake Mills. Other artists featured on the track are Bassist Pino Palladino & Vocalist Danielle Ponder, both of whom will join Marcus on tour this Fall.

You can view the video for 'Grace'  here.

Editors - 'Karma Climb'

Editors return with this new single, "Karma Climb'. A grungy synth-heavy remix from Berlin-based, Parisian DJ/producer Jennifer Cardini and production partner Damon Jee was also released.'Karma Climb' is from their upcoming September 23rd album release, EBM'Karma Climb' is forceful and loud as it immediately hits with its ghostly atmospherics and hard-hitting guitars. It's a new-age stadium anthem that's best heard live. You can start by seeing Editors hit all the nuances in this live performance video.

You can also stream the song here.

Rapper Joey Bada$$ has a new album out that everyone should check out. You can check out the music video for my favorite track 'Where I Belong' here. Beyonce enters her 'Renaissance' era. You can listen to my top two favorite tracks here and here. Maggie Rogers releases her new album 'Surrender' and Billie Eilish surprises with two hauntingly lovely 'guitar' songs.

HEAR THIS NOW: THE MUSIC SOUNDCHECK EDITION 10

Welcome to Hear This Now! The ultimate music soundcheck is back with Edition 10 and the first roundup of 2022. Here, I dive in with some of the best tracks you may have missed so far in this first quarter of the year

In edition 10, I'm highlighting songs starting from the past week dating back to January of this year. It has been a while, so I felt a super-sized mega-post chockfull of great music picks was needed. I've sprinkled some music videos throughout and linked a playlist with all the songs mentioned at the end. Enjoy!

Leading off the week, we have a pristine new collaboration from South London boys Bastille and Brazilian producer Alok'Run Into Trouble' superbly blends the impassioned melodic pop and catchy dance floor vibes into a bombastic anthem just in time for those Summer festivals (and playlists). 'Run Into Trouble', and my next tune are the perfect vibes for the 2022 festival season. Pop Chameleon Harry Styles is back with a new era and album titled Harry's House. This debut single from it 'As It Was' dropped today along with the vibrant visual. Whether or not you dig Harry's sound or vibe. It's still exciting to see someone change up every album era. I think that's something all three artists I mentioned in the leadoff have in common. Harry's new single gives us major dance-rock vibes a la Bryan Ferry, and a bit of The Strokes. It will be interesting to hear where the rest of the record and single go musically. To close out the lead-in is the British Alternative legends PLACEBO. They return with their eighth studio album 'Never Let Me Go'. 'Never Let Me Go' is the duo's first release in almost a decade and their best and most cohesive to date. It's dark, weird, and poignant in only a way that Brian Molko and his conspicuous and eccentric songwriting could be.

Dead Oceans artist Toro y Moi is back with his third release 'Déjà Vu' from his forthcoming album, MAHAL, and is set for an April 29th release. The incredibly groovy Pop-funk track features a Justin Morris-directed music video and follows previously released songs, 'The Loop' and 'Postman'. Young 17-year-old rapper redveil drops a new collab with Sam Truth titled, 'better'. His new single (and his upcoming album, learn 2 swim) showcases the artists' skills and provides commentary on that pivotal coming-of-age era. redveil is set to go on tour opening up for Denzel Curry who always has a super spicy recent music video with T-pain called 'Troubles'.

Top Dawg Entertainment's newest signee Doechii has a hot new track out. 'Persuasive is a futuristic melting pot of bold and sassy R&B. In the attached visual, Doechii portrays a dizzying array of personalities via fashion. Another fierce femme in R&B/Hip-Hop music, ilya makes her highly-anticipated return with 'Sad Bitch Bad Bitch'. For some great sounds within this genre coming from across the pond. Check out Ibeyi teaming up with Jorja Smith on 'Lavender & Red Roses'. Ella Mai and her smooth vocals deliver on her new romantic slow jam, 'Leave You Alone'. Dancehall artist Leon Jacques drops Parts' a reggae-influenced track.

Jazz Pop vocalist Celeste returns with 'To Love A Man', and finally, Emeli Sande offers up 'There Isn't Much'. Kae Tempest finds home in unexpected collabs, like their latest 'I Saw Light' with Irish Singer Grian Chatten. The spoken word artist continues to push boundaries of where music can go and what it is with each release. As Kae brilliantly fuses kinetic wordplay and bare-bones synths to create magic flowing through every line. Korean-Australian Rap super crew 1300 come through with the raw and powerful energy on their new hyper pop-tinged track 'Oldboy'.

For some fresh Alternative and Rock songs, we have a new single from English Folk singer Tom OdellBlossoms release the jangly Paul Simon-inspired 'Sulking Poet'. Music chameleons Yelawolf and Shooter Jennings team up on the music project titled Sometimes Y. They create a debut that is a bombastic mix of Country, Rock, and everything in-between. Irish Alt-Rock band Rowan drop the rollicking and guttural new track 'Honesty' off their forthcoming debut record. For some musical eccentricity, listen to the Art Pop duo Mattiel and their song 'Cultural Criminal', then there's the grimy track 'Cigarette Smile' by the buzzy Nordic band The Daze. Singer-songwriter Wallis Bird, whose seventh studio album 'HANDS' is out May 27th. Her third single from the upcoming album is 'Aquarius'  and is a highlight. Bird's pensive songwriting shines on this quietly reflective track that explores change, identity, and the questioning of the authority of control. Great Pop tunes are up next.

MICHELLE is the NYC-based music collective catching ears with their groovy and gorgeously layered soundscape. The predominantly queer and POC group is anchored by the four female vocalists whose beautifully intuitive and in sync vocal interplay, and sparse production. The collective is currently on tour have found a home in their well-crafted lush synth-pop with plenty of influences ranging from R&B to Disco and Bedroom Pop. MICHELLE is a band to something to truly take note of, with track three 'Pose' being a prime example. An infectious pop tune that feels like a slow burn in the best way possible.

Shelf Lives' song 'I Don't Think I'll Go Out Today' finds the based South London duo tackling experimental pop via gritty post-punk and a Riot grrrl fierceness. This single is the last release from their upcoming 'Yes, offence' - mini album. They will also join punk rock legends Skunk Anansie's U.K. tour starting on April 25th. On 'Anybody Else', 17-year-old L.A. artist KALI adeptly rides the rollercoaster of emotions that is love and relationships on the dreamy and jubilant track. London-based singer-songwriter Carmody drops the meditative 'Hurricane', the opening track on her upcoming debut. 'Hurricane' pays homage to Carmody's Grandmother in all her glory, including her imperfections and complications.

DREAMER BOY has an insanely catchy new bop, 'Over Everything'. The artist fuses sugared electro-pop with hazy nu-disco. There is a trippy switch up towards the end that brings this pop daydream home. For more major ear candy, and so does newly minted Best Song OSCAR winner FINNEAS with his new track 'Naked'. Japanese-American Pop artist iamkyami teams up with Lazygirl for a slice of bubblegum pop perfection on the single 'When I Call'. Lyrically, the song is quite the razor-sharp and tongue-in-cheek takedown on f*ckbois.

The edition 10 roundup ends on South Korean music producer and DJ 250 and his vibey track 'Royal Blue'. There is where the producer creates the lushest and most gorgeous soundscapes, filled with distinctive sounds that will have you ready to dance or chill. 'Royal Blue' is lifted from the DJ's recently released new album 'PPONG'. Lastly, Rex Orange Country teams up with Tyler, The Creator, on the funk-infused pop jam out 'OPEN A WINDOW'. It marks the first time the two have collaborated since Tyler's 2017 album Flower Boy.

Rejjie Snow // ‘Disco Pantz

Dublin born rapper Rejjie Snow continues to set a commanding tone with his latest release from his upcoming July album. His new track “Disco Pantz” features R&B singer/dancer Tinashe and grouptherapy. This playfully funky summer groove sees all artists in fine form, finding Rejjie Snow word play clever and poignant. This is the fourth offering from the hotly anticipated album, “Baw Baw Black Sheep”, which also features a track from the late MF DOOM which you can listen to here.

https://youtu.be/srLzXtOqaOc

Twin Shadow // 'Sugarcane’ + ‘Lonestar'

Twin Shadow makes his return to the scene prepping for the release of his eponymous new album due out July 9th. His latest pair of singles ‘Sugarcane’ & ‘Lonestar’ are the latest and final releases for the artist before the album drops. Each song also finds Twin Shadow aka George Lewis delving into his and embracing his Dominican heritage, with each track dripping in a tropical grooviness, and African inspired beats and drums. Although it may be a new sound for Twin Shadow fans, for Lewis’ himself it’s one that comes straight from the heart and homeland. You can stream both tracks here.

https://youtu.be/QUDMYURHe4I

Ariana Grande // ‘POV

After a few days of posting teasers on her account which were a series of photos of herself of performing live. The teasers were revealed to be a collaboration with VEVO Originals which debuted the first live performance of (mind you one of favorites from the album) the track ‘POV’. The slightly paired back performance features Grande in a gorgeous purple two piece pants ensemble giving it her all vocally. This is only beginning with more to come in this collaboration from these music titans. All I can say is.. Yes, please!

https://youtu.be/fLFvbwrWLQY

Gavin James // ‘Sober

Dublin based Singer-Songwriter Gavin James new single takes on a timeless question of love or lust with “Sober”. An artist whose known for his unwavering ability to craft melodic folk-pop numbers that are full of emotion and authenticity. Gavin dives deep on this new track pulling forth a poignant albeit sad story to tell about being in love with someone then in the morning they don’t love you back. The track is sure to catch your ears quick and features production from Patrick Pyke Salmy and Ricardo Muño, with mixing from Mitch McCarthy.

https://youtu.be/NcM7sEUwBHo

Pongo // ‘Bruxos

Pongo marks her return to music this year with the single “Bruxos”, meaning sorcerer in Portuguese. The Angolan-Portuguese singer takes on jealousy and the belief the jealous people would cast curses on those who succeeded in this fiery, high energy, and magnetic track. Pongo is one to watch creating her own unique vibe from an amalgam of cultures from South America to Africa. Mixing in dances like the Kuduro, Break, Malanje, dancehall in for good measure. You can stream the new single here and watch her COLORS live session below!

https://youtu.be/5duWNtire2o

Calica // ‘Letting Go

Taking major inspiration from disco-pop and artists like LCD Soundsystem & MGMT. Singer-Songwriter Calica creates the ultimate vibe with her new track, “Letting Go”. A fun and breezy bop that will quickly put anyone listening into a happy and fresh mood. The Florida born artist and producer seemingly finds the perfect mix of nostalgic vibes with dance-ready grooves, on this sweet tune about an old flame.

https://youtu.be/vVJPPeFBKEQ

Rarin // ‘Toxic Ends

Newcomer and Hip-Hop artist Rarin dropped his debut mixtape today and instantly a banger. The nine track mixtape titled ‘Toxic Ends’ is one of the aspirational sort with lots of self-growth and pump up anthems, and songs about not letting the haters get to you. My favorite track ‘Toxic Ends’ is two parts pop punk anthem with emo rap that’s super catchy and quite ready for it’s Tik Tok moment! You can go here to listen to Rarin’s mixtape and you can view the video for my favorite track which below!

https://youtu.be/vtBqT-0mLF4

Yebba //October Sky

Another stunning, poignant and melancholic number from Yebba combining neo-soul with touch of 60s psychedelic pop. The artist truly lets her vocals play around the melody and shine her never over doing it creating a track that stays with you long after. If you want to catch some pretty wistful vibes (expertly produced by Mark Ronson ) then hit that play button below.

https://youtu.be/8ysq5GzTXfc

BIM //OTR

The London based R&B songstress new track ‘O.T.R’ is giving us full 90s soul diva vibes and yes, I am loving it. ‘O.T.R’ beautifully showcases Bims vocals and vocal range in a way that we don’t always get to hear with her work as a sessions vocalist. The control with her vocals and deliberate choices she makes, the minimalist choice for instruments and music are what truly elevates this song. Which when all put together create a nostalgic and sweet take that feels like a delightful hymn.

https://youtu.be/3t5ftlSLYD0

Yoshi Flower //Slow Dance

Always an artist that thrives on being genreless, and left of centre. Yoshi Flower latest jam is an immediate head-nodder. Yoshi quickly paints a picture in this 2: song of ideal Cinderella as they slow dance and in the most effortlessly cool kind of way. Want a cool Summer jam? Then definitely hit play on this one.

https://youtu.be/J6nbkmXJex8

NEEDTOBREATHE // ‘Sunshine

Grammy-nominated band NEEDTOBREATHE are prepping for the release of their upcoming record Into The Mysterydue out July 30th via Elektra Records. It’s the band's eighth album and their current single from it ‘Sunshine’ is a foot stomping country pop number. The piano at the end closes the track nicely. The band is fresh off a CMT Awards performance with Carrie Underwood (she is a featured collaboration on the new record). The band states the forthcoming album they explore more of their Country music roots. So expect those sounds like lush acoustic guitars, fiddles and other strings, heart warming melodies, or collabs with artists like Carrie Underwood. You can catch the video for ‘Sunshine’ below and check out their previous single here.

https://youtu.be/JnqG2Z68Cro

Maple Glider //Friend

Anyone who is a fan of unique Indie voices and great storytelling will surely find a home in the latest release from Tori Zietsch aka Maple Glider. The Melbourne/Naarm-based singer-songwriter released her debut album “To Enjoy is the Only Thing” off Partisan Records. ‘Friend’ the last release and video prior the album showcases a skillset similar to that of Sharon Von Etten. A deliberate, raspy, yet haunted vocal delivery like no other..

HEAR THIS NOW: THE MUSIC SOUNDCHECK EDITION 8

Welcome to edition 8 the first one of this year.

Here’s some of my favorite tracks from the past few weeks or so that I think everyone should give a listen to. As per usual I hit on a wide variety of genres and I hope you wind up adding at least one or two tracks to your listening rotation. So it’s been a while let’s dive in...

Oscar Lang // ‘Are You Happy?’

The London based artist Oscar Lang is definitely making a name for himself. Lang has his debut album coming out in July off Dirty Hit and his brand of lo-fi Alt-pop tunes have not only gathered him praise, but numerous fans. ‘Are You Happy?’ is the second release from his Dirty Hit debut, ‘Chew The Scenery’ out July 16. A song that’s as full of punk rock flourishes, as it is filled with eclectic dynamics, and indie rock guitar licks. The songs’ attached visuals are utter head trip filled bright psychedelic imagery. AFI // 'Dulceria'

Since their 1991 formation, AFI have undergone many eras over the subsequent years. Now in 2021, AFI has rebirth themselves once more as they prep for the release of their June record “Bodies”. AFI have been dropping various tracks since January. Starting with the dark torrent of emotion from ‘Twisted Tongues’ & the melodic mysterious dream in ‘Escape From L.A.’. In April we got ‘Looking Tragic’ and my uber fave ‘Dulceria’ both revel in hints to our dark times during quarantine and escapism. ‘Dulceria’ though, with its dark and brooding bass line is intoxicating in only a way AFI can yield. All at once feeling very much like AFI and nothing like I’ve heard from them. You can stream my favorite, ‘Dulceria’ here and check out the music video below. As a long time fan, it’s always great to see one of my faves evolve and tackle new themes. You can pre-order ‘Bodieshere.

ARO // 'House Of Lies'

ARO is the artistic moniker of Aimee Osbourne (yes, those Osbournes) and her crazily talented band. Her newest single is the wildly dark trip-hop influenced number ‘House Of Lies’. ONR & SARAH BARTHEL OF PHANTOGRAM // 'Must Stop'

Scotland's enigmatic ONR returns with another surprise collaboration. After last month's funky dance-rock jaunt with legend Niles Roger. ONR does a complete 360 on 'Must Stop' slowing things down. 'Must Stop' is a mesmerizing tale of love and obsession in the social media age. The trip-hop influenced track features Sarah Barthel of Phantogram. https://youtu.be/wNeyh_pfd8Q

BASTILLE // 'Survivin'

Bastille’s newest release finds the band in fantastic form. It's the follow up to July's 'WHAT YOU GONNA DO?’. ‘Survivin’ is another fresh sound from the quartet. Co-written with singer-songwriter Plested. Frontman Dan Smith continues to experiment with his vocals here. You can hear some vocoder/autotune on the choruses for artistic effect. As for the band in its entirety, Kyle, Woody, Will, Dan, and yes Charlie has found a great groove and confidence. Seemingly, honing in on their talents. 'Survivin' reveal a band that's comfortable exploring and experimenting with different sounds. Bastille will always be Bastille. Yet, for any artist change means growth and once again Bastille has upped their game. This song is an instantly catchy lofi jazzy-pop gem. Check out the new animated music below. https://youtu.be/9pRVo-B7-rI

SAINT CLAIR // 'Elegy In 'C'

Jazz tinged pop artist Saint Clair releases the third chapter from her ardent visual EP on grief. The track ‘Elegy In 'C' is an elegant, emotional, and poignant poem set to music. Although ‘Elegy In ‘C’ felt notably heavier in tone than the previous tracks of ‘Goddess’ and ‘Violet Hour’. It felt like a weight had lifted once the song had played it’s final note. For an album that was an album on personal grief. I felt it, it hit home. Through layers of spoken words interpolated through, dulcet tones and melodies... only added to the quiet fragility of the song and subject matter of loss.

https://youtu.be/on5cbbxHTS4

CARLA BRUNI // 'Le petit guépard'

The final single released from the French pop chanteuse new album that’s out Friday. 'Le petit guépard' which translates to 'The Little Cheetah’. A cheeky metaphor for breaking against misogyny and old society and its systems. Bruni is in fine, and playful fun form on the folksy number. This will be Bruni's first collection of music in seven years. You can still pre-order/save here.

Bad Child's new single tackles distractions and ignorance of larger societal issues. From the opening line Bad Child's hard hitting wordplay calls us all out to step back and look around us. Musically, we get a punk funk vibe on the song with Bad Child's soulful & energetic yet raw vocal delivery. 'Hi Def' is eccentric and fun as it delivers an important message.

Everything Everything's new track 'Violent Sun' is chaotic, melodic, frenetic, and absolute fun. 'Violent Sun' premiered as BBC Radio 1 Annie Mac’s Hottest Record making it the third song from the band to do so. The track closes the 'RE-ANIMATOR' record due September 11. Frontman Johnathan Higgs directed the visuals for the song. It features each band member sprinting frenetically through their respective lockdown locales. CLAVVS // ‘Half moon

A euphoric track that’s not super new but nonetheless a track I loved from first listen. It’s a recent SoundCloud find and off the Electro-pop duo CLAVVS newest album “No Saviors”. “Half Moon” ushers in hazy lush synth work into the passionate undertones. It all melds together to elevate the duo’s precise melodies and glossy production. Lead vocalist Amber Renee’s vocal delivery is gorgeous a bit sexy as she weaves this hypnotic tale.

SAMINA // ‘Prom

The twenty-year old shows a ton of promise on her debut single “Prom”. A soft melodic guitar-driven track about the high school right of passage “Prom”. Lyrically Samina takes an introspective look at the institution of Prom. How it never lives up to her or many people’s expectations. Samina’s vocals are wistful yet harmonious as they flit about the track. The song itself is pleasing mixture of dreamy indie pop and bedroom pop with notable influences of artists like Lorde and Noah Cyrus easy to find. Samina says this song was the perfect way to close out this chapter of her life.

https://youtu.be/AjhO2YOKrUE

GLASS ANIMALS // ‘Heat Waves’

This incredibly catchy track is from the band’s upcoming album “Dreamland”. It’s an expert mix of several genres such as electro pop, alternative dance, lofi, and hip-hop. The vocals of frontman Dave Bayley have a smooth and raspy tonality to them. The music video finds him wandering the streets singing along with various passerby’s filming the acting on their phones. Bayley ends the clip alone in a theater. We see the rest of the band playing along on tv screens. This music video is an ode to the culture of live music, the sense of community and closeness it fosters. It’s a community where vulnerability and being yourself is key. ZARA LARSSON // ‘Love Me Land

Zara’s new track is insanely fun from the get-go. She oozes sheer sex appeal in the music video and the track itself. A song is about finally letting go and learning to love, hence the title. This live Jazz cut from the Chicago based drummer and producer is the second offering from his upcoming release “Universal Beings E&F Sides”. The experimental track is an exuberant and lively arrangement full of elements from soul, R&B and Psychedelia. An album about being stuck inbetween life and death. The lyrics are dark almost seductive and they paint these abstract scenes of horror. Echoes of the bands like Joy Division, Depeche Mode, early NIN, and Bauhaus can heard flittering in and out. HEAR THIS NOW: THE MUSIC SOUNDCHECK EDITION 3

Keeping you updated on the latest and greatest in music! Here’s edition 3 of the songs you need to hear now!

This latest edition (Edition 3 to be exact) features everything from Baroque Pop from Australian singer The Dawn Of May to a Sexy R&B Disco track from Victoria Monet. There’s something for everyone...

THE DAWN OF MAY // ‘Zenith’

New York-based artist The Dawn Of MAY's newest single is evocative and beautiful. MAY’s sound is simultaneously of the past yet the future. On ‘Zenith’ she hones in her aesthetic and artistry carefully crafting songs that are otherworldly. Her vocals are siren-like amongst the orchestral Baroque Pop numbers. ‘Zenith’ firmly sees The Dawn Of MAY stepping into her power.

EASY LIFE // ‘Nightmares

Nightmares’ is a breezy and uplifting Indie Pop track musically. Lyrically it takes an intimate look at mental health and its fragility. Easy Life combines Pop hooks, Hip-Hop delivery, and a bit of Jazz to create a track that’s fun and undeniably catchy, even with its serious subject matter. ‘Nightmares’ was recently in an episode of Michaela Coel’s HBO ‘I May Destroy You’ in a pivotal scene.

JAMES BAY // ‘Chew On My Heart

His new song as James put it himself is a song about being deeply and madly in love. The song (and music video) wholly gives off that vibe with the sweet yet simple production. You can also hear the 60s Rock, Folk, and Psychedelia influences as well. It’s Bay pared-back but still imbued with emotion, hope, honestly. These are the strengths that made his songwriting stand out from the get-go.

SAINT CLAIR // ‘goddess

Goddess’ brings us the initial taste from Saint Clair’s new EP and project. A four-part visual EP. Saint Clair is the musical alias of North London musician Emma Topolski. You might recognize Emma from her band Childcare where she is the Bassist. Her musical influences range from R&B to old school jazz artists. It all somehow winds itself all around her music. ‘Goddess’ is no different. Her smoky timbre sounding wistful and melancholic. This music is firmly rooted in Pop with its Folk-Pop sensibilities.

JAMES BLAKE // ‘Are You Even Real?’

British Alternative R&B crooner James Blake new song is a melodic confection. Blake collaborated with Ali Tamposi, Starrah, and Peter Lee Johnson to write and produce the lush ambient piece. Lyrically the track focuses on the need for real human connection, love, and on staying in the present moment. The twinkling synths, ambient instrumentation, and rich harmonies drive home that theme. Blake’s singing has an ethereal quality to it as well. This track is the first follow-up to his 2019 ‘Assume Form’.

JUICE WRLD + MARSHMELLO // ‘Come & Go

Come & Go’ is a collaboration with EDM wunderkind and Producer Marshmello. The late rapper Juice WRLD ruminates over his difficulties in being a better man and in love. This collaboration with Marshmello and the posthumous album is a glimmer into the artistic psyche of someone who saw beyond genres. The subtleties in vocal melodies and delivery plus Marshmello’s production choices make this song quite catchy.

THE HUNNA // ‘I Wanna Know

Rock band The Hunna shares the bombastic new single and video ‘I Wanna Know’. The track eschews high-energy and fun times capturing the group's essence and live performances well. Its release is ahead of the band's new album set to drop in October. The new song gives a taste of what we can expect to hear from the guys in The Hunna. You can view the video below.

KATY PERRY // ‘Smile

Katy’s new track ‘Smile’ is the follow-up to her euphoric ‘Daisies’. It’s also the title for her upcoming album (aka KP5) due August 14. This timely track is a life-affirming song about staying positive above all else. One that for Katy herself is a culmination of her artistry. Written after one of the darkest times in her life. Songs like these have been Katy’s treatise on life. They are why so many of her fans are drawn to her. ‘Smile’ is a disco-pop bop with a strong and positive message. It has an infectious candy-coated beat that will stay with you long after.

LOTUS // ‘Catacombs

Lotus is an instrumental electronic band. The band’s newest single ‘Catacombs’ is off their upcoming album due August 21st. It’s a mind-melting mix of dirty grooves, funky harmonies, and soulful synths. A band that finds inspiration in some of the originators of Electronic and Dance music like Daft Punk and St. Germain. Lotus’ four-on-the-floor jazzy style takes us on a delightful journey of sound in just over 6 minutes.

KAYTRANADA (FEAT. LUCKY DAYE) // ‘Look Easy

This R&B slow-burning club groove is the new single from Dance/DJ Producer KAYTRANADA. It’s the first song and follow-up to his 2019’s studio album ‘BUBBA’. The track features Grammy-nominated singer Lucky Daye. Lucky’s smooth and soulful vocals meld perfectly with KAYTRANADA’s sublime grooves and rhythms, making this quite the earworm.

VICTORIA MONET // ‘Experience

This dazzling disco-pop jam features Victoria’s feather-light vocals dancing about the joyful track. A collaboration featuring artists Khalid and Producer SG Lewis. It’s an effortlessly fun, upbeat, and confident track that will have you singing along and dancing in no time. It was a track Monet was hesitant to release due to the current state of the world. Ultimately, Monet felt it could lift the spirits of many, and that voices featured on the track who are Black and/or Queer should be heard. The song lyrically explores feelings after a breakup but in a positive light. The lyric video captures the song's 70s and 80s Disco and R&B vibes with a roller skating dance party. You can ‘Experience’ the lyric video below.

Until then,

LOVE FAME TRAGEDY ‘Wherever I Go, I Want To Leave’ - ALBUM REVIEW

‘Murph’ Murphy's solo project, Love Fame Tragedy is an eclectic Rock rollercoaster of emotions.

The debut album ‘Wherever I go, I Want To Leave’ from Love Fame Tragedy is out now. Love Fame Tragedy is the solo project of Lead Singer/Guitarist Matthew ’Murph’ Murphy of TheWombats. The inspiration behind the moniker/solo work is the Pablo Picasso exhibit at London's Tate Modern. For an artist to name a solo project after something so grand and surreal meant the album had to follow through... and it did. Fans got the first taste of the surreal new tunes with the release of 2019’s ‘My Cheating Heart’. Two EP’s from him have subsequently followed.

Love Fame Tragedy // ‘Wherever I go, I Want To Leave’

For his glittering debut, on ‘WhereverI go, I Want To Leave’, Love Fame Tragedy expertly weaves a pseudo concept album and a sleek Indie Pop Romp. Seamlessly creating tracks full of emotion, self-deprecation, honesty, and witticisms. All without coming across self-important. Murph brings out many of his musical friends for the fun too. PixiesJoey Santiago, former Frank Ocean Drummer Matt Chamberlain, and The KillersMark Stoermer feature on the new song. ‘Everything Affects Me Now’ is a deceptively upbeat song about dealing with the rigors and milestones of Adulthood. The first lyric “I see the cracks in the Mona Lisa now” is a true gut-punch.

The opening track ‘5051’ sets the tone and pace of the album despite the controversial name. A 5150 in the California penal code allows someone qualified such as a clinician to involuntarily confine a person deemed to be suffering from mental illness. For what it's worth, 5150 is also slang for crazy. The same could be said for the devilishly fun track ‘Pills’ but I am pretty sure that we are all too busy dancing. The nod to The Killers lyrically, “I do this every time. Jenny was a friend of mine” only adds to the slightly sinister charm of the song. Cheeky witticisms like these are all over ‘Wherever I go, I Want To Leave’. ‘5150’ and ‘Pills’ represent some of the wilder ones. It is these boundaries that Murph pushes that make this record a fun and electric listen. ‘Multiply’ a collaboration with Jack River and co-written with Bastille’s Dan Smith. It will quickly wind up stuck in your head.

Wherever I Go, I Want To Leave’ is an album about hedonism and the fragility of love. Each track is a confessional in some manner fraught with inner and outer conflict. Featuring full-bodied guitars, rich synths, layered vocals, and melodies tie together the storyline. Many of the sounds are reminiscent of the 80s, a decade known for excess. On ‘Brand New Brain’, which is the album closer (and a perfect one at that). Murph replaces ‘car’ with ‘whip’ continuing those cheeky slang terms to the end. As the hedonism gives way to an unsureness. It’s the quiet fragility of this track that you can hear and feel.

His latest single flows with Hip-Hop beats, Island flavor, and supple African beats. This track is the perfect Summer banger.

ANDREW LEVIN // ‘If I Died Today

A guitarist at heart, San Francisco’s Andrew Levin’s new song straddles the line of slow groove and ballad. Taking many twists and turns along the wavy psychedelia train at the start. The anthemic message of the song echoing loud and clear. You can check out the track for yourself below.

BINNY // ‘Deep End

Set against a minimalist and hypnotic Electro beat. Singer BINNY bares all for his take on the ‘f-- boys with feelings’ anthem. ‘Deep End’ is about unintentionally falling for someone. AJ TRACEY & MABEL // ‘West Ten

This collaboration by U.K. chart royalty has Pop and Rap colliding creating an unexpected hit. Mabel’s laidback sexiness and Tracey’s Rap swagger are full effect in ‘West Ten’. It’s a well crafted, fun, and undeniably catchy R&B Pop jam. All laid atop a groovy 2step beat. A song about owning ones sense of self and ones confidence. It’s truly a contender for Summer song.

SABIYHA // ‘Love Me Alone

British-Guyanese artist Sabiyha new release is a beautiful yet heartbreaking Dancehall tinged jam. The song lyrically charts a period in her life when she went through a string of toxic relationships. A fiery R&B track which takes the form of a empowered conversation that counsels herself and others. ‘Love Me Alone’ recently got a makeover. Sabiyha‘s filmed a new stripped down version of the song on a rooftop in her South London neighborhood. You can stream the original here and watch the stripped down version below.

London’s Oscar Jerome new track has him stripping back to the basics. The new song is ‘Joy Is You’ and off his upcoming debut album ‘Breathe Deep’. CHARLIE BARNES // ‘Last Nights Glitter

A song anchored by strong acoustic guitar and accented by beautiful woodwinds. ‘Last Nights Glitter’ is the new song by artist and Bastille touring member Charlie Barnes. It’s a song about growing up in this era and what it means to become an Adult. How we all come to terms with it and learn what matters in life. His songwriting has grown since the ‘Oceanography’ album. An album where he used a ton of flowery language and metaphors. Although ‘Oceanography’ is a beautiful record. The new single ‘Last Nights Glitter’ is more personal and you can hear that. Charlie’s vocals have never sounded better with a boldness and grandiosity. Everything seemingly comes together on ‘Last Nights Glitter’ to create magic.

SAM SMITH // ‘Fix You’ (Coldplay Cover)

Sam’s interpretation of this signature Coldplay track is quiet and intentional. Sam creates beautiful emotion in the moments of silence. Where he normally hit those big booming notes. Not doing too much to the instrumentation leaving much of the original there but with a gospel tinge. It’s just enough for people to recognize. We still get those lovely melancholic Sam Smith moments and layered vocals. You can view the cover below.

ALL THINGS BLUE // ‘Dicking Around

Dream-punk band All Things Blue new single ‘Dicking Around’ is an eclectic dream land. The Los Angeles band fronted by India Coombs meshes genres well on this second single from their upcoming debut. Titled ‘Get Bit’, All Things Blue debut is due out on October 2nd. It’s a song that tells a dark inward tale of a narrator who contemplates acting out on their worst impulses. You can watch the trippy official video below. Then stream the song here.
